Can anyone think of a 4 seat convertible with similar driving characteristics to an MR2 Roadster? Occasional rear seat usage only.
Mid-engined, lightweight, RWD, 4-seat convertibles are a pretty rare thing, so I suspect probably not.Depending on how tall the 'occasional' users of those seats are, you've got a few proxy options open to you. The 911 is probably the closest thing you'll get to a 4-seat, RWD 'sports car' without the engine up front - but you don't have many options for bodyshapes in those rear seats.

OP, what do you daily? Sorry if you already mentioned.
Talking to a MR2 roadster mate who is bored of his daily, and thinking about replacing it with a RX8. I'm not sure about that. From one side, RX8 is a little "complicted" for a daily. I'm not sure I would want to deal with a wankel for a daily, at this point. From another, if you drive a RX8 daily, would you still want to jump in a sports car for a weekend drive? Sure the MR2 is a convertible. But as far as driving fun, the RX8 is probably closer than most dailies. Certainly closer than his daily. Might take a bit of the edge off the MR2, specially that he doesn't trash his MR2.
Don't get me wrong, the RX8 is not a true sports car and definitely not a match for the MR2. Totally different set up as well, with rear mid engine vs FE RWD. Totally different feeling. But RX8 is still as close as any 4-doors has the right to be. It's a long wheelbase MX5 NC. The other way around, I know. Plus, wankel on a daily basis? Take a special type of person I guess.
What do you daily? Or any of you MR2 gentlemen posting on the thread.
Daily is an Outander for the family and an Audi A2, if I can prize my wife's iron grip from the keys. I think the RX8 overlaps and knowing how he drivers his MR2, I told him if he buys a RX8 as a daily, I think he will probably sell the MR2, because he will decide he doesn't need it, or to buy something faster. Unless he totally hates the RX8 or finds it too unreliable. This is my take. But I might be wrong.

Alright. That is very far apart from a MR2. No overlapping, which is the ideal situation between a daily and a weekend car IMO.

Also have a SEAT Cupra R Mk1, that I have had for almost 20 years, standard besides a map, with less than 70K on it, which I use sparingly for my hot hatch fix.I think the RX8 overlaps and knowing how he drivers his MR2, I told him if he buys a RX8 as a daily, I think he will probably sell the MR2, because he will decide he doesn't need it, or to buy something faster. Got the precats removed, looked to be in decent condition, with no evidence of break up, good news.
I was going to put in a new exhaust system, but as the existing original system is fine, I'll wait until it is needed, and put it a full system, sports cat etc.
Mechanicals are more or less sorted, might look for a front strut brace and body brace, but first get the outstanding cosmetic issues sorted, with some paint correction.

Month or two under the belt, and a few impressions.
Great fun, crazy value, fast enough to be fun, small enough to use on small rural roads, ride is ideal to handle potholed rutted roads. The 1ZZ engine is given a bad rep, not a k-series Honda, but revs cleanly, VVTI and suits the car, especially since the pre cat has been removed, definitely revs better. Yes it is a Avensis econobox engine, but 7200 redline means it works in the MR2. It feels quicker than the 140 BHP would suggest.
A pleasant car to drive in town, small, nippy, light controls, easy to park etc. There is enough space for two for a few days, few bags etc. You can absolutely feel the mid-engine pivot when pushing on, brilliant fun to feel the weight pivot as you load up the rear wheels. I am struggling a little with the seats, I prefer a wheel style seat back adjuster rather than a lever, just cannot seem to get the angle right, likewise the steering wheel adjustment, while it is height adjustable, just missing the ability to adjust how close it is to you, as I prefer it a little closer.
Being so low, means you get the LED inflicted retina cauterizing SUVs lights when driving at night, both from the front or the back, Self dimming rear mirror is going to be a key update. It also makes trying to find the car in parking lots difficult, parked next to a new Range Rover, you have to be right on top of it before you see it.
Got my replacement hood booked from the well known trimmer in Swansea, quality of his work is great, and 1/3 of the price popular in MX5 MR2 owners clubs, 6 month lead time ! I also had the tracking done, made a real difference to the feel, much more planted. So far so good.
