I fitted a lovely XU10J4RS in my Peugeot 205 GTI back in the day. Such a great engine, and made a great noise with a decat + cone filter in my 205. Never smelt very petrol-y either but maybe i just didn't notice as the car was a pre-cat car anyway so the old engine would have smelt similar?
Hockey stick clip I expect Peugeot do still sell and they only used to be a couple of quid but be forewarned that the spares desk in a Peugeot dealership is staffed exclusively by antagonistic argumentative morons who's job it is to not sell you things so it's a complete waste of time finding out the part number because they'll just tell you it's wrong. Or that your car didn't come with those.
Your window and possibly central locking is probably the crappy cables in the rubber sheath between the door and the bodywork breaking up because they're too short and made of some kind of Fromage. The right way to fix it is to strip the rubber back and re-solder everything that's broken.
Having stripped out a couple of 306's I'd take off the interior rear quarter trims around the rear seatbelts if I were you. They like to rot there and you wont know anything about it until the seatbelt makes a bid for freedom. Check the jack points in case some helmet has squashed them with a trolley jack and split the underseal which will encourage corrosion.
Great cars generally and actually built quite well compared to some of the more modern toss I've owned!

Mine is very strong in terms of petrol fumes. Not nice.I bet that absolutely flew with 300kg less weight!
In other news, I've ordered a non-broken fuel flap that will hopefully stay shut, for the princely sum of £35.
Pics from seller (yuck).
I think you are missing a cambelt cover as well. I think you said it had a new belt at the previous garage so perhaps they still have it lying around.
Looks a really good base to work with. I always liked the colour.
I give my 205 mi16 death on trackdays and these 16v pug engines are an absolute peach for that purpose.

Thanks, I'm weighing up whether to go to my usual family mechanic or a specialist who's a bit more expensive but has worked on these before, to sort these niggles out.Your window and possibly central locking is probably the crappy cables in the rubber sheath between the door and the bodywork breaking up because they're too short and made of some kind of Fromage. Your car shouldn't smell that strongly of petrol just because it's missing its cat.
I'd check the fuel lines for leaks, and make sure that the gasket on top of the fuel pump (assuming it's under the rear seat) is sealing properly.
Thanks, this is top priority to fix, followed by thermostat then stock springs on then brakes then electrical niggles.I'd check the fuel lines for leaks, and make sure that the gasket on top of the fuel pump (assuming it's under the rear seat) is sealing properly.
Stat, stat sensor and trim restorer have arrived:

It's amazing how good they look over 2 decades on. IMO the proportions are just right for a little hot hatch.
Yeh and all the little details, like the black trim on the fuel flap, all seem to work together.Eibach stock height front springs have arrived. Apparently the rear is adjustable to need so find out what the stock setting is for the rear to match the new front height.

My 996 stank of petrol with a decat but the 205 was always pretty smell free. It was a little rocket up to 100mph for sure!

Maybe running a bit rich due to the thermostat? Can you check the lambda sensors via a code reader to confirm all is well from that pov?

Could be that yes, it took ages to warm up yesterday so maybe it's running cold. Something is up.My 996 stank of petrol with a decat but the 205 was always pretty smell free. It was a little rocket up to 100mph for sure!
While expensive at £18/bottle, I've been recommended this stuff.
For the faded plastic:
It appears to work a treat:

Amazing difference!
It's really good stuff, will do the rest of the car once the weather improves. In other news, I decided to return the greenstuff pads and go with y'all's advice, and ordered this lot instead:
Which reminds me I need to find some decent brake fluid.
I enquired about ITBs and cams earlier, which would cost £6k inc. installation and manifold. Sadly waaay out of my budget, but I'd imagine these would be huge fun with that induction sound and an extra 40 bhp.
Perhaps something to consider if values creep up, then it could be more justifiable.

Fantastic, OP! The handling and ride compromise on these is verging on witchcraft. Absolutely stonking chassis.
Look forward to seeing this progress
The chassis is amazing!! Waay better than my old Ph1 172. In that I could never tell how much grip there was available, not much feel.Look forward to seeing this progress
The current tyres are awful so looking forward to having a decent set on.

I remember when these were new and thinking that they're such great looking cars. In your case, also in a great looking color.
They're pretty unique and very late 90s. Also pretty vast inside with the rear seats folded down.Ordered this brake fluid:
Also sourced a new cambelt cover and right electric wing mirror as the current one keeps folding inwards, I guess the spring is broken.
Need to find some bolts for it.
