What is the state of the rear beam bearings? I know the design is very similar to my old 205 and the bearings for the stub axles were pretty temperamental and known to fail. Definitely worth checking if you can. Chambered rear wheels and squeaking were signs to look out for from memory.

No squeaking or chambered rear wheels, but will ask my mechanic to have a good look over things like the axles and bearings. There's a fair bit of steering wheel vibration at high speed which I suspect is tyre balance. They might have some blebs in so perhaps it's due some fresh tyres. While it's cost £60 ish to get the tyres fitted I might as well spend the extra £140 and get the wheels shotblasted and powdercoated, and supply the fresh tyres, which I'm thinking TR-1s.Just arrived:
Pug's been off the road for over a month now, and since taking a look underneath, it's clear the chassis needs some upgrades. So, been waiting for parts, which have now arrived:
Eibach springs 15mm lower than standard, plus some new driveshaft cover things:
Bilstein B4 dampers:
Imaxle refurbed rear axle:
On the lookout for a set of tyres too, not sure which brand to go for.
Managed to sort the locking issue, and the alarm has stopped going off. Still struggling to find the source of fumes coming into the cabin though.
If I can get it sorted and driving nicely, I may treat it to a full respray after a year or so. If it behaves!

15" is a really tricky size to find great road tyres in. If I recall, aren't OEM sizes something weird like 195/55, which isn't a common size either?
I suspect your best bet is to suck up the few % discrepancy in the speedo reading, drop to 195/50s and fit Pilot Sport 3s.

I called around a few other places and they were quoting 3x the amount. I know the founder of Imaxle and they offer a 2 year warranty, and their product page seems very thorough. Their reviews are really good as well. They are a decent enough mid-range tyre, and aren't going to throw you in a ditch. If you drive fast or track the car, then you'll notice the difference between them and a Pilot Sport 3. If not, they'll do you grand.C70R said:

Had a pair of Conti UltraContacts fitted to mine today including alignment. I've not had a proper chance to see what they are like but they are a lot less flubbery than the EcoContacts I had to make do with!
Pilot sport 2s were the road tyre of choice when I had mine I believe?
Gti6 was my first "fast" car and it felt like a rocketship, 3rd gear just pulled forever. Absolute hoot to drive.

- b6? Yellow bilsteins standard height

I've gone from an E55, to a 535d, to an E60 M5, to a 1-litre iQ in recent years, and the GTI-6 still feels fast, just got to work to extract the performance. The M5 and E55 were way too fast for a b-road, the 535d was just about on the limit. I think with the chassis refresh, the 6 should become a real hoot to drive.

Lovely purchase and looks a tidy project. I had a 306xtdt 5dr in the days and did it up to look like the sporty d turbo. Fitted cyclone wheels then moved on the 17' TSW catalunya, wrecked the handling but wasn't amazing to begin with. After really wanted a 306 GTi-6 but opt'd for a 99' Nissan Almera GTi. Absolutely bomb proof and never let me down in the 8yrs I had it. Full bolt one's intake, exhaust, decat, cams, pulleys AFPR dyno'd 196bhp and went decent for 1150kg
Tyre wise I would 100% look to go to a 195/50 and get the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's, would transform the car. Had the on my 305z and performed very well.

Have a look at Uniroyal Rain Sport tyres. They're what I usually fit to my Pug 205. Not the best in class for overall grip, but more than good enough for lower powered cars and they have excellent grip in the wet, which is pretty handy being the UK. They have a pretty quick wear rate, but I look at that as a bonus for weekend cars.

Uniroyals, particularly the Rainsport 3, were class-leading in the wet. In recent years, they've been significantly overtaken by the premium offerings from Continental, Michelin and Goodyear. A friend of mine ran 5s as wet track tyres, and my Pilot Sport 4s were significantly better on an almost identical car. The soft sidewalls contribute quite a lot to killing steering feel.C70R said:

Also the rain sport's are significantly cheaper and they have a good range of smaller tyre sizes.
Ultimately you get what you pay for, I have PS4 fitted to my other car and that only has 200bhp.
