How did you measure the gearbox oil temp?
Infra red thermometer.

It doesn't have to be accurate down to the degree. Just measured the gearbox housing temp from different places and allowed a couple of degrees for losses to atmosphere.

Can you clarify the process? I get the first bits:

Drain fluid,
Drop pan
Replace filter
Replace pan
Fill till fluid overflows
Turn on engine

Here things get a little fuzzy:

Do I need to cycle the gears (so the car would need to be on jackstands)?
Wait till gearbox heats up, fill up gear oil till it overflows.
Leave overnight to cool down, top up?

Fill up the gearbox until fluid starts leaking out.
Cycle the gears whilst the engine is running (presumably you'll need a second person) and continue to fill until it stops leaking.
Idle the engine for 10mins or so until the filter pan gets upto temp.
Refit the drain plug when it stops leaking.

Dunno if I fancy being under the car whilst it's cycled through the gears hehe Although I've seen it done on a 4-post lift, which I guess is slightly more terrifying...

Being under the car when that happens on the driveway sounds a bit terrifying tbh. I'll see what pricing I can get for someone else to take on that risk, ah for a four post lift.

I've settled up with the specialist, they managed to twist porsche's arm and send back 99% of the parts we used so far which saved about a grand on the bill, which was amazing of them. I've now got it booked in with another specialist who can/is willing to do the timing chain change from the front for thursday next week. Likely it will take a week or so for the job(s) to be done.

The plan will be as follows:

New chain, guides, tensioners, timing solenoids
Turbo solenoid, turbo vacuum pipe
Gearbox service

1&2 are the key bits, I can hold off the gearbox service for another month or so if needed.

Well done, happy for you!

Fingers crossed it will be the last thing it needs mechanically so you can enjoy it as intended!

Me too! If it works I need to think up a suitable road trip to celebrate.

I did try cycling the gears last night. But it will only go into D, R, M1 & M2. You can't manually shift it above M2 whilst holding it on the brake. If that is what is meant by "cycling the gears" then it's not so much of a problem.

A 2 post lift would be better, then you could run the car through all the gears as the wheels wouldn't be held on the brakes.

A lift and a place to install it will be the first thing to on the list, should I ever win (or play the lottery).

Tomorrow is the big day! The Cryenne moves from one specialist to another, please cross all appropriate appendages for me!

Same here. So much more pleasant than crawling underneath...

Good luck with it.

Glad to hear that the other specialist makes the cost of the work more palatable….does this mean you’re out of the dog house now? laugh

My wife has been pretty understanding of it all really, I’m very lucky to have her.

I mean she always wishes I would stop buying cars, but I think that’s true for a lot of partners of car nuts. The Cryenne crapping it’s pants and costing money is not something she’s over the moon about, but the timing chain going wasn’t something she was going to kick me for.

Now if I buy another car anytime soon , then I’m doomed hehe

Cryenne update!

The new chain etc is on the car and the specialist is starting the reassembly process. Might have the car back on the drive end of next week?

Excellent stuff... was that a Freudian typo? Either way, an excellent term.

Scratch that, collection is aiming for Wednesday of next week - but still the car will be with me soon!
