Heh-heh, just a bit of daft fun!

This is the touring taking a well earned rest after dragging all this clobber up to the highlands in the summer. Obviously pre wheels but also before I did the suspension bits too. Interestingly it gave about the same fuel consumption towing (23 mpg) as the SAAB Aero wagon, Brabus E class wagon & Audi A7 Bi turbo (crap!!).

Had to work the revs in ye olde 525i a bit more mind!

Great colour!

It'd look superb on a set of E39 18" Style 32s I reckon biggrin

Cheers Dan, it's Bluewater which is more silver than blue. Just a pity the original owner went for grey interior, something more contrasting would have been nice but beggars can't be choosers!

Dunno what it is about style 32's. Some days I like them, others not so much.

Cheers

Not long after I bought the Alpina, a chum bought a B10 3.2 with something like 230k miles on it. 5 speed Spanish 'box and it went like the clappers, sounded good too. Local indy reckoned they went better than the 3.3's that came later.

Just think they're the best wheel design for the SE; although I do like the 16" Style 33 'Turbines' too biggrin

I had the 18" Style 32s on my E38; refurbed them in sparkle silver:

And the 16" Style 33s were my go-to winter wheels for my first few E39s biggrin

Touring came out of hibernation a few weeks back. Was definitely a bit grumpy to begin with but sailed through the mot. A few hours later, the EML lit up, so tried fresh fuel and an Italian tune up. Seemed to work but then returned......Plugging in showed 'fuel trim both banks', hmm, checked for vacuum leaks and found a small grommet at the back of the head that had split. Bargain, quick repair and all good hopefully. Nailed the caravan on the back for a Highlands adventure and got 15.5mpg.......bugger etc. Few more of the same EML over the week, cleared and reset adaptations and got 20mpg coming home which is more like it.

Fitted a new MAF (VDO/Continental) which was a 1/4 of the price of an original yesterday, cleared everything and it's driving better than ever so I think the original MAF was always on the way out. It was giving almost 30 mpg yesterday and feels much more sprightly so hopefully that's sorted that! All the new suspension made for a much better towing experience other than the economy....

Alpina B10 still hiding in the garage as the weather is still ste.....

Typical of these at the age they're at now; like you've done though, an easy fix and glad it's worked smile

Always amazed at how some fresh oil & an oil filter can make an engine sound so much quieter. Some fresh Millers into the Touring, reset the service lights and checked for any codes. Nothing coming up so the replacement MAF seems to be doing just nicely. We are now up to the grand total of 52k miles...!

ST got the same treatment but with Motul specific, genuine Fordy filter & plugs. It had only done 3k miles (10 months ago) since the last oil change but seems it needed it.

M54 - one of the best straight 6's BMW ever made IMO

Looks great too biggrin

Yep, now the MAF is doing what it's supposed to it has got that top end zingy-ness back that went awol.

I looked into supercharging it a lot last year with the Infinitas kit but after watching Stretten (M539) suffering high intake temps due to the lack of an I/C I decided to leave alone. They are now selling modded s58 charge coolers for the M54 to help but you end up around £8k which is just too much really.

Yeah; an sc was a serious consideration of mine when I had my Jap import 530i Sport touring but like you said, c£8k costs just put me off and you'd never get that back when it comes to selling the car on etc...

TBH I think it goes against what the touring is all about; but that's my thought process on it.

The M54 3.0 engine is just so smooth and silky; its meant to be a decent engine that'll waft you to where you're going with decent speed and style; but relaxed with it too

They both look ace, big case of Alpina and gingercator envy here.

Also now making me think I should treat my car to a new MAF for my e39 530i as I'm not sure it has ever been changed.

Touring looks great too.

The blue 3.2 B10 was owned by a chum and went like stink with over 220k miles on it! It's currently up for sale by another owner but the consensus at the time was that it was faster than any 3.3 litre B3 or B10 that had been experienced.

I've always wondered about an Alpina E39 Kenny... biggrin

10 years ago I used to regularly drive along the A94 from Meigle to Glamis and one of the cottages at (I think) Castleton had a dark blue or green E39 B10 parked outside.

There was also a farm cottage along the backroad from Newtyle to Glamis that had a green E31 8 series.

Is the garage above experienced in E39s?

I know there was a grey B10 V8 up around that way because the chap traded it in for a camper van...The chap that owned the blue one in the pic bought that grey V8 and then flogged it (he does that...). There used to be a green e31 850 Csi that lived at the far end of Carnoustie opposite the football pitches, not sure if it's still there these days.

The garage in the picture is next door to Ashton Motors who is the indy around here (Dundee). Gordon who runs Ashton is old school and only does older stuff upto and including e39s. He is worth dropping in on for a chat.

Thanks for that.
I'm in Fife so was looking at the BM specialists in Kirkcaldy or Perth but suffering from an inability to make my mind up so the car continues to languish in my garage frown

Wakey Wakey! After what seem like ages finally fired up the B10 at the weekend, fresh oil & filter, pressures sorted ready to tax for the beginning of May...........and it's just started pishing down....again....

Some new bits ordered up, so will post up once they arrive. Can also recommend Infinity Wax Plastic coat stuff, seems to work well on the unpainted black plastic bits.
