Great project and it's looking pretty positive so far!

The original listing has now been removed from Copart, was this car written off due to the theft of the M-Sport steering wheel and idrive? Or was there more to it?

Bookmarked! Best of luck with the repair; I hope it goes smoothly.

Out of interest does anyone know if the theft of BMW steering wheels are a big problem at present? A guy I was working with had his stolen one night whilst it was parked outside his flat late last year. His insurance company was trying to write the car off due to the cost of repair using a BMW garage and brand new parts. No idea what the outcome was as I no longer work at the same place.

Since then I've taken to putting a Disclok on my i3 as I would imagine steering wheels are pretty much universal across the BMW range.

A pal at work also had his nicked from a 420d like the OP's purchase.

It’s been a thing for at least the last 5 years but it’s the MSport ones and widescreen Nav that get targeted.

Thanks Gents.

It really isn't something I'd heard about until recently. Every days a school day.

Looking at the spec and overall apparent condition you've bagged yourself an amazing car at an amazing price. I do hope the repair process is straightforward as it appears it might be.

Interested to know if the service history shows up once the replacement iDrive unit is plugged in. Not sure if the data is stored inside the unit itself or elsewhere, with the unit just acting as a monitor.

The broken tie rod. Looks like forklift damage.

Will get a mobile mechanic to attend the workplace so that I can bring it home!

The repairs to this car seem trivial, which makes it potentially a great purchase, no real optimism required, except…

Engine is silky smooth.
That’s quite optimistic for a 4-banger diesel biggrin

Good buy, by the sounds of it. If you're interested, I have a set of winter wheels, tyres and TPMS for sale in the classifieds that would fit this car.

Had a quick nosy on Copart. There's a blue 420i with near identical damage, although that one has the digital instrument panel which has also been ripped out.

Hopefully they've not cut the fibre optic cable between the headunit and amplifier unit in the boot!
I was going to mention this before the OP took delivery, but didn't for one reason. I didn't want to scare them.

There are people out there who offer "services" of the above, which basically writes off the car. Handy if your car has an engine fault that is a 4/5 figure bill.

Fortunately it hasn't been cut and the car starts and drives, so all looks good.

I actually think the price on co-part was very very low as people bidding may have been aware of the potential of this.

I noticed the car at £5200, it got to £6200 before its turn in the Live Auction. My first bid was at £6900, promptly outbid to £7k, but it took quite a while to reach £7100. I let it run until almost sold to place the 7.2k bid…. Two “bonus time” later, no more bids… “SOLD!” There were 400+ people watching the live auction.

A non CAT car in that spec would be more than double I would guess. You are on to a winner providing nothing nasty crops up. Fingers crossed for you.

One other thing. Document everything you do on this thread, that way if you do sell it you can direct the buyer here to show the reason why it was written off and to show it was correctly repaired.

Its stored on the unit but if he takes it to BMW for a £100 oil change, they'll flash that to the new i-drive and it'll bring through any other services that BMW have done with it.

Looking good and it appears to have a decent spec (heated wheel, surround view, comfort access, wifi [= Carplay if you have an iPhone]). Enjoy!
