That's coming along nicely Benny. I'm thinking of building an E36 track car when my 205 gti finally gives up the ghost. Would you mind doing a summary of the costs when you a minute? I always amazes me how quickly things add up so I may even consider getting an ex-race car or one that's already track prepared.

I'm going to do similar project this winter, but it will be used for racing in local E36 cup.

Will you modify the oil pan to avoid starving and add additional oil cooler ? If you do, then post some pics. And do you have plans to improve the cooling of rear diff ? We managed to boil the oil after 2 hrs on the track last year.

We've done all the work ourselves so no labour charges except £50 and a crate for the guy who did our cage. Our next major cost will be an M3 engine hopefuly sometime next year. May be worth having a look at the sites below as cars come up for sale once in a while. NIce Pug by the way wink

Nothing planned for this season but once we do our engine swap we'll look into it. Have a look on these sites if you haven't done so already for BMW race car advice:

PART 15

Converted the hubs to suds and nuts to make wheel changes easier (they were previously long bolts) and fitted a front strut brace. You can see the adjustable camber plate on top of the KW 2-way race suspension.

PART 16

Wheels and tyres have turned up. 17x7.5 Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2’s with ex BTCC slicks. Dropped the car down for the first time since the new suspension has been on and it’s low! The combination of this and the extra offset on the wheels (required for big brakes and suspension) means we’ve had to flare out the wheel arches a little (these need to be tidied up). The suspension needs setting up yet and the ride height will likely be higher than the photos, at the back at least.

excellent project so far, and plenty of work gone into her thats for sure

the stance on the wheels with the kw is excellent, looks really agressive in the first pic!

I have to say you're doing a sterling job of putting this all together but I have to question the wisdom of starting off with a 325 rather than an M3. You've admitted that you're aming for M3 power in the future, which'll mean changing engine, mounts, gearbox(?) wiring it all in etc. For a cheap track car I can understand a 325 but for what your doing I'd have spent the £2000-3000 extra on a base car. After selling the interiour and stuff I don't think you'd be miles away on price. There are plenty of older M3s advertised at about £4000, less on Ebay and stuff with small faults/bodywork damage MOT failures etc. that wont affect you for a track car. Just my 2p's worth. Keep up the good work and the posting!

That might be the crux of the matter though chap? To find an extra £2000 down the back of the sofa is not always that easy!!

That was it really. We've stretched our budget as it is and the engine swap may not come for a few years. We made the decision that we'd rather have a focused track car built around the best race parts we can afford for a few years, rather than half track/half road car. I think given our brake and suspension set up, slicks and weight loss, we may surprise a few more powerful cars...even with our lowly 325 wink

Thanks to all for all the words of encouragement anyway smile To be continued.......

great thread mate, and a stirling project. Grab yourself a copy of Practical Performance Car if you've not read it... it would be right up your avenue so to speak!

I was at work at the time I posted that and the pictures wouldn't load, now I've seen it I do really like the 4 door look - as has already been said it really does look like an old touring car. As far as I know didn't you start building the car pretty much as soon as you bought it Benny? I just thought that if you'd have started with an M3 to begin with, then maybe just wait and upgrade either the suspension or brakes at a later date when the budget allows, rather than the way round you're doing. I'm sure it'll be a track weapon even with the 2.5l (imagine a 50% BHP gain!) having seen what my lowly 205 Gti can achieve, I've certainly been able to hustle some bigger machinery and it certainly ain't down to the driver (see profile pic)

Will be good to see where this goes - I think a 316 badge wouldn't go amiss either.
