We started the day with final tidying up of the engine bay:
Car finally outside, Mr. X admiring his work
Hood on and a quick wash:
Ready for first road test:
Filled up with EXPENSIVE gas
Pit stop at a friends place and by then it was pretty obvious power steering was not working properly, would work intermittently at low speeds.
So we got another powersteering pump from a friend and replaced it, had to drop the SC bracket to do so!
After we changed it we soon found the problem was not gone. But by driving more, steering improved. And we also found that the vanos solenoid problems were not fully gone. So we changed out more solenoids that were acting up:
We managed to get it going and were able to do some proper testing in the evening / early night until it started raining on us and it was just too unsafe to continue on old tires (Toyos from 2011 and 2015!!!). It was about 2:50 am when we put the car into the garage, satisfied everything was like it was supposed to be.
The car had not even begun to cool and we just opened some sodas and immediately started talking about what we would do next regarding the E30 M3 No rest!
Next morning I drove Mr. X and his son to the airport.
Somehow all his visits to Iceland end at approx. 3:00 am completing the mission for that trip

Took the car for inspection. For some reason all the inspection guys seemed to know about the car & build
They seemed to lose interest in other work and suddenly a lot of people were inspecting the car.
When the inspector got under the car I could hear “Well, someone has been shoveling new parts under this one!”
New “23” sticker, only found one thing wrong….. the horn not working! We had forgot to connect it.
So with car inspected I could start using it for normal use so I went to the shops, of course parking way out in the corner of the mall parking lot
So now I could start driving the engine in. Plan was to use the run in oil for 1000 km of mostly low end pulls from 2000 – 4000 ish rpm´s to bed in the rings, then change to the Mobil1 5-50 before heading to Germany.

For some reason the hoses I had been using taking air into the driver side SC had developed a tendency to come loose.
These were 2 90° bends that kept coming apart in the middle. So I got a 180° hose and installed it
Did some more run in and stopped by the local race track where the pits were very wet and provided some mirror photo opp

As problems with bank 1 Vanos had resurfaced I called my fellow E39 M5 owner again and told him I was still in trouble.
He quickly offered his bank 1 Vanos solenoid board. He had also lent me his bank 2 board!!!
His car is going though a multi year restoration so he will not have to use his boards anytime soon
But once he had handed me the board, he turned the tables on me
Can I borrow the throttle actuators from your S85????? How can I say anything but yes to my rescuer!?!!?!?
“Really easy to remove” he said. Soo……
That escalated quickly
On their way out, Ivar and his brother, who both have worked as car painters, could not stand seeing the Vorsteiner hood crooked on the M5 and one of the latches not catching fully. So they quickly started working on it!
Of course they managed to get it working

Managed to source a used AC pump from the main used BMW parts dealer here in Iceland:
Fun fact it is from a car with the registration number RU159 which is one of only 2 new E39 M5 cars sold in Iceland. It ended it´s life in a crash, drivetrain lives in an 528 shell.
The other car sold new was….. tada, mine There were also between 30-40 imported M5’s by individuals.
Some proper cleaning needed of course…..
Good enough

Ok now it was finally time to address something that happened on June 11th, while Mr. X was still here.
We were working flat out trying to finish as much as possible and get the car driving before he went home.
So what happened is that once when I was raising the car on the lift, I forgot the garage door was up and just proceeded in lifting the car to it´s normal height.
Resulted in this.
Back of the roof totally mangled.
So I had talked to the painter and he told me he had time around the 30th. So here I am dropping the car off.

Picked up the car, roof now perfect and they had polished the car and made it shiny
So with only 3 days to go until the car gets shipped from Iceland to Rotterdam, we now tackle the final "biggie" which is the AC pump replacement.
Going to Germany in July without AC does not sound good. So I meet up with Markus after work at his shop.
Needed to drop the passenger side SC to gain access.
And on top we needed to gain access too.
So first thing we notice the units are not 100% the same, damn.
We found out that my AC pump was fked the other one was good.
My AC clutch was good but the other one not.
And we needed to move some parts between them so we could connect to the AC system.
Markus wasted no time and started disassembly.
I asked him if he had done this before and knew what he was doing.
The answer was negative but he was sure he would make it work.
So here are some pics of the process. I kept reminding Markus that we at least had to have the pump working as a pulley.
Only 3 days out from shipping I was rather stressed
I have to admit I did not like where this was heading
We did find out that these 2 Denso units did not have the same internals.
Needed to move this connecting piece between them.
Refurbing the clutch.
Starting to look like an AC pump again.
Needed to move the clutch bearing between units.
"Frankenstein" ready, a mix of 2 pumps, filling up with PAG46.
Just before midnight it goes in.
Next is changing out the drive in oil, has done 1000km.
Markus takes a sample of the oil at the start of draining.
Analyzing the sample. Markus was not 100% happy and we filled it up again with mineral oil for some minor run/flush.
Finished up at 1 am.

Ok went to the AC charging shop again....
Lo and behold, system held pressure and AC was ice cold - SUCCESS!!!!!!
Then went to fellow M5 owner Daniel and bought new front bulbs, got free install included!
Back at the garage I wondered how the hell the car could leak brake fluid on both sides!
I then realized this was the oil from the air filters we had oiled very very liberally
Loaded up the new tires, Pirelli P Zeros, to have them installed.
My painter recommended a shop that he said would install them without scratching the wheels.
Told them I was there because of their reputation of not damaging wheels!
Approx. 15 minutes later, they had scrached a wheel - 2 days until the car goes on the boat!!!
Stopped by a tinting/filming shop to pick up the lip spoiler, they had wrapped it in CF.
The guy gave me some leftover film to play with....
My hood pumps are shot so I wanted to pimp my hood prop stick:
Now in CF!
Then final oil change.
Scientific oil analysis:
It was accepted so Mobil1 5-50 goes in.
And some fuel....
So getting to be ready for the boat....

Ok started the day with a final wheel alignment.
Then took the scratched wheel to my painter, the wheel shop agreed to pay for the repair. Dropped off at 13:00.
Was back at 17:45, wheel ready
Good color match which is not surprising since he painted the whole set a few years back
In the evening I started packing - good assortment of straps is necessary.
Brought my ancient XP laptop to be able to configure the Zeitronix display that had been acting up.

[July 8th, 2022] [Shipping day!!!!]
Started the day in my garage, packing stuff into the car. Some cleaning products....
All kinds of parts, oil, SC fluid, belts, brake pads, you name it.
Rear lip spoiler in there too, will be put on in Germany.
Still some minor airfilter oil dripping.
Made some instructions for the shipping guys driving the car.
Some stuff from Markus was going into the trunk so I stopped by his shop.
Some tools, torque wrench and a sledgehammer. I questioned in my mind WTF are we gonna do with a sledgehammer but decided just to take it along.
On the road to the port.
Not far from Reykjavik:
Nice views
Port in sight.
At the shipping comany dropoff.
RESULT!!!!! Mission accomplished!
Me and Markus will then fly to Amsterdam on the 12th, in 4 days.
Then travel by train to Rotterdam to pick up the car.
