Well the next phase is well under way! While the car was having the engine rebuild i noticed microblistering on the front scuttle from a shoddy repair which was carried out 2 years ago by a well reputed Ferrari/classic restoration specialist in Aberdare, South Wales. Absolutely gutted as the repair was recent when i bought it, and they were highly regarded i thought it would be one less thing to worry about. (Everyone know these motors are known for there rust on the scuttle and rear number plate recess). So i decided that while it had to have this sorted, it also needed paintwork elsewhere, and a few tiny bits of rust around the sills sorted.

Anyway off it went to Southam Bodies in Coventry who's workmanship is top class. Ive known Greg for a few years now and seen enough of the cars he churns out of that place to know how meticulous he is. Greg set straight to work removing all the panels so it now looks like this!

Scary!

The wings were absolutely knacked as water seems to gather at the bottom of the wing. More bad news as the rear number plate recess which was also repaired by the aforementioned bodyshop also was unsealed and finished poorly so was starting to rust again. Greg had to cut out this section and start again. The whole rear section and rear quarter has been bare metaled. The bonnet had a repair at some stage in the middle and was full of filler. Next stage is panels! So far its new bonnet, doors and wings with all the trimmings. Its going to be a skint Xmas!

Rear panel done right!

More pics to follow soon, with a few trick parts on the way!

Cheers,

Warren

Lol Russ! Who was the one who didnt come to the 'ring? ;-) You'll have to come to Deutch Connection next for a convoy and a catch up. :-)

OversteerVJ12; Cheers mate Not usually in to Jags, but yours is stunning, love the stance and rims. :-)

Panels for the M3 are cheaper than you'd think. I paid around £170 for a new wing from a dealer a few years ago.

Doors and bonnet are standard E30 items, will be worth cross checking prices with you BMW dealer.

ETA - I'd urge every E30 M3 owner to have the bumpers and body kit off the car for a good look, lost of nasties are hidden. Take the interior carpet up too.

10 points to you sir. :-)

Doors dont have the holes for plastic trims and because of that they are £370 each, wings £170, bonnet £260. Every time i read that last sentence i want to cry......

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciated.

Also bought new front and rear carpets, heater matrix and valve.

Bought my E30 M3 a few years ago it was already kitted out as a track car with the carbon airbox coil overs roll cage etc etc I had it liveried up and went on lots of track days and twice to the Ring it was brilliant.

Then this happened at Oulton Park

So I went out and bought this off a guy who had just built it and had it on the rolling road when he needed to sell due to work problems a full group N 2.5 litre engine and it was not cheap! The rolling road print out is below maxed at 315 BHP. At my 1st track day at Croft another owner with a special engined E30 M3 walked over to tell me he knew of my engine and it was not a true 300 plus engine but his was so I told him put up or shut up and out on the track we went. Well if mine wasnt 300 his wasnt 200 as I blew him away in the paddock after he came over all sheepish asked the full spec of my engine then said oh no wonder then he obviously did not know what was in my engine after all!

At the end of 08 after doing the Ring and Spa where the car was a revelation compared to all the modern stuff there I decided to go the whole hog and start from scratch with the car. Had a spit made and took the car back to a shell had it sandblasted and the only bit of rust was a small piece under the windscreen everywhere else what spot on. Had it seem welded to start with.

Then took the roof off to get rid of the sunroof and had a roll cage welded in properly instead of the bolted one I had originally and painted it red.

Bought fibreglass front and rear bumpers to save weight and then had it sprayed vauxhall white as that is the brightest white around.

Then had the BMW stripes sprayed on which was a job and a half, will get it stickered up as a Warsteiner again when finished.

Had the wiring loom altered anything not needed has gone I bought a carbon dash door cards rear side panels (again not cheap) from a guy in Germany I got a Stack dash put in a fuel cell made to fit in the spare wheel space, engine is back in subframe in etc etc

I have had some 6 pot callipers and larger discs made for the front and Porsche Boxster front calipers adapted to fit the rears and new discs. The job has now come to a bit of a standstill hopefully I will get it all finished in time for the summer fingers crossed!

Where does the fuel tank normally live on the E30? Both cars look fantastic by the way!

In the rear bulkhead as well as being far safer the cell is in the well that is one of the lowest parts of the car so ideal, as in the sunroof being taken out, the lower the weight is the better a car handles.

But doesn't moving the weight backwards past the rear axle compromise the handling? Not a criticism, just curious! smile

My mistake the engine is group A and I have found some old posts on the E30 M3 forum from the guy when he was building it (Adrian) with help from John in Germany who has a similar engine. This gives you some idea of what is in the engine and costs involved plus they can be revved to 10,000R PM not that I ever will with mine!

Hi John,
I knew you wouldn't be far away to comment. I totally agree with you, that you cannot go and buy the Grp A parts for a street car, they must be used in conjunction with each other. You might want to use a part for coolness factor but you find that it will not work or fit without fitting parts A and B as well. That's when you find the prices are so prohibitive.

Yes John, I can justify my engine bits and their prices and can see the worthiness of them but bear in mind my engine cost nearly £11,000 just in parts prices. As you know my car rolling roaded at 319bhp but how accurate that is, no one knows but it gives you a rough guide of what the engine is putting out even if the rolling road was a bit optimistic. As you have said in the past, BHP figures are irrelevant, you have to get in the car and feel the driveability, power and torque and leave the figures for down the pub

John,
I have been following this thread with great interest and I am a little worried. With the set up I am running, am I safe with my standard 2.5 crank or do I need an extra oil hole in the journals like Jefrem suggests ?
Just to remind you, I have 38.5/32.5 MS valves with 29.5 ports, SRD7 springs with shim under tappets, 312/292 MS cams timed to your specs, 48mm throttle bodies with a 50/55 4 into 2 Evo 3 manifold
Bottom end is new genuine BMW 2.5 block with the extra webbing for strength with oil squiters. Standard BMW 2.5 crank but it has been lightened and balanced along with an Evo flywheel, the compression ratio is 12.0:1. I will be using your 18cm runner CF airbox with alpha N.
What can I safely rev to bearing in mind I do not expect to go to anywhere near the 10,000 as mentioned in earlier posts?

Lovely m3 mate! Gotta love the Warsteiner colours too! Ive been out on the Nurburgring in Johns car. Its now a 2.7 with slide throttles and has around 320bhp, maybe more. It also has a 4.10 LSD, and a full on 6 speed DTM gearbox. 60mph in 1st gear! That car is immense. I managed to blag a session with him which turned out to be 7 laps back to back. Top bloke and very knowledgeable too.
