I'll echo the comments on here. I know of lots of really good young drivers, and I also know of lots of bad older drivers. It's unfair to say everyone who is young is going to be a bad driver.
GFWilliams, I was exactly the same when I first passed. Drove at the speed limit absolutely everywhere, and made sure I was always safe. It wasn't until I had been driving about 1.5 years that I started to explore my capabilities more.
Good luck with it! You're very lucky to have a car like that at your age.

What is it with all the young driver bashing going on.
I would say most of the young people on here will be fairly safe drivers being that they are clearly interested in cars and have a certain respect for cars.
Ive been driving for just over a year with no incidents * touch wood * and will hopefully keep it that way for years to come.
As for the engine size bit I have a mate who has a 1.8 mx5 as his first car and coming from a petrol head family he is a very good driver and does enjoy a good hoon everynow and again as im sure most people on here do.
Nice car to the OP though! very jealous!

My parents have said that I'm not allowed to give mates rides in the car more than a few miles (just to + from school if needed) untill I have had a years experience..
There're going to be some lonely road trips. It's a lovely first car but parents threatening to enforce rules like this are the exact reason I bought my own.
Enjoy it and good luck with your tests!

Because it is staistically likely, my best mate is an actuary for a big insurance company the chances of a 17 year old claiming in year 1 is 21% overall, but if you divide this into engine size 17 year olds driving petrol cars that are 1.6-2.0l that runs to 54%. the vast majority of cars insured for 17 year olds are 1.2 or less, and those of you that say it's not a fast car, no, not by your standards, but for a new inexperienced driver it is.
It's a 1.4l...Anyway, not the point. Condolences for your loss, but I won't be like that.

Tbh - learning from the people at school, about 50% of the people who write off their cars have been drink driving.. I would not even think about drink driving, so that reduces the risk..
Oh, and I will post up a pic with a paper with the date on boxing day (after the Hoon )

I'm 20 and have been driving a 1.8 Mk3 Golf since I passed at 17. It's not got a mark on it from my ownership. Furthermore, I spent a lot of time driving my Dad's old car (53 Mazda 6 2.0) and have clocked up a fair few miles on his new one (57 VW Passat 2.0 TDI). The size of the engine isn't what makes young drivers crash - it's the showing off and trying to see who can go the fastest that causes accidents.Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
