Papercup's V8 RX7
Discussion
Rex got dropped off to Craig yesterday, and is already being dismantled. The new gearbox is still in its crate, waiting. Look what I found on the floor:
That would be my 'new' Viper diff, and behind it is Craig's Viper diff, so you can see what will be happening to my one shortly to make it fit. There is also one of my new 'unbreakable' drive shafts, the ones that Craig broke (!) with his 800 foot pounds of torque. There was a problem with the manufacturing so they sent two new ones, and they are going on my car instead. There's also the freshly powder-coated subframe to go on, out of shot.
While its up there in bits, I've given poor Craig a list of things to do, most of which are very dull and not worth mentioning. But the aircon window switch and pressure thingy is on the list....we shall see.
There may also be something else happening.....more soon.

What does a new LS3 cost you then?

personally I'd buy as mint and late as i could. Post-99, that lovely metallic blue, then you'll get top money for the motor and extras (later spec turbos are sought after) and the interior etc will be spot on. It will cost you 7k. Expect to get at least 3k back though, and that beats spending 4k and not getting what you want.
I've only seen one mint, post-99, metallic blue come up for sale in 5 years...I bought it (for a lot more than 7k) and still drive it daily. The few post-99s that come up for sale are usually the RB/RB-S variant without the higher spec turbos. If I found another one for 7K, I would keep it as a spare in case anything happened to mine.

ideal base engine for a 427 twin turbo stroker
Having driven one, I don't think I'd go that far. But a new LS3 is indeed a good base for going 7-litre, or some monster LS-7 heads, or....both. I like doing things bit-by-bit, you feel the advantage of each change. I was toying with simply buying a handbuilt LS7 which made 675 horse, but I'm glad to be doing it in stages instead.
I've also had some pics from Craig's phone with some more progress with the rear end. Back on Page 5 you may remember the underneath of the car looked like this:
With the framework that Craig puts on all his RX-7s that have the standard Mazda diffs fitted. But those who have been following the last few pages will know I've got the diff from a Dodge Viper sitting up there (its pictured above) along with some new driveshafts from the States. Time for a change at the rear end.
The disadvantage with that original framework is the way the exhaust has to come under it, which means the rear of the centre box is the lowest part of the car. It meant that my shiny new FEED mid-box I'd brought in from Japan wouldn't fit as it was too large (its the largest mid-box you can get I believe, a foot-and-a-half from end-to-end, to try and keep the car 'track-day-legal') so I ended up with what you see in the picture, which is actually an Edelbrock from a Yank pickup truck [i believe...].
Now Craig is planning to get rid of that left-to-right bar and build the standard subframe into something strong enough to hold the diff and rear axles steady without it. So this is what he has been up to for the last week or so....
This will mean a bit more to those who know what a standard subframe looks like...
I took the FEED mid-box back up there last week as suddenly its in the running again. Good news.
