Hi,
could you tell me what kind of gearbox you are using?
I'm building a vw bug with a 1.8L watercooled VW engine, I have the right adapter plate, flywheel and clutch. But I don't think that the original VW Bug 1302 gearbox will live a long life.
thanks

We're using a Renault Master unit. Finding a good one is the trick though, most have been abused by white-van-man syndrome.
If you've got a VW 3-rib in decent condition you shouldn't be too bad, ours had done 20 years of work on the 2.3 VW engine before it exploded.

Excellent! I used to navigate for a fella in the NORC championship. I can't remember the year but we won the 4wd cart spring class and came 3rd overall behind Dave Simmonite and someone else in buggies. I still have the memories of the harness burns following some of the rougher events

Guy Smith at a guess? Or Fisher?
I've got some burns from this one tbh! Loads of cars there with it being Davids memorial do, but not many of the old buggies left racing any more unfortunately.

Yes, might have been Guy, Dave was more consistent that year (85 maybe?)

No, I went off to college then moved 'darn sarf' and have been doing stage rallies since. Haven't had much exposure to comp safaris since or All Wet and Dirty Club events.
It appears Steve has been competing - I googled him and his name came up in the results for a Yorks club trial in 04.

slomax said: that is the definition of ridiculous.... I WANT IT! Nah, the definition of ridiculous is the day it meets a pair of rotrax blowers... Anyhow, a bit of the buggy off the start line here - wet concrete and mud/terrain tyres don't work very well unfortunately, so the first 4 seconds is just a scrabble of wheelspin - we're setting off in 2nd gear as it is... Looks a bit steady but the top of 3rd is just short of 90mph as it goes past the camera for reference. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLKlZp6cMf0

Right, we've traced the problem with misfiring to a dodgy throttle pot as well as the heat issue with the fuel, so a bit of tinkering over the weekend and we're away, sorted the hesitation/misfire with the throttle pot and just waiting for the new hoses to move the tank. We've stripped down the rear wheel bearings to make some thicker shims to account for wear as the new bearings bed in, so that should be back together shortly, along with a new fuel tank shifted up front to help the turn in a little and hopefully solve the heat/boiling problem. Spare throttle pot and a new set of leads on the way as they're a little past their best, and we'll see how she goes with the other half of the engine firing at the next one
