No pictures from today but I fitted a replacement set of wood. The lacquer on my refurbished set has started to lift and made it look very nasty. Still need to source a good skislope & ashtray to complete the replacement set.

I've been told you can but they're around £40/pair.

They are still available, I have seen a few places advertising them. They will probably sell them as 'show 'plates' though.

The new tax disc holder and key ring are a nice touch.

hence the extra cost... the reason they call them show plates is it is only legal to use them when the car is off the road... maybe at a show! I've always been confused as to the legality of different types of plates, but as I understood it the 2001 regs was a move towards a standard, and the DVLA say that you can only fit the latest standard to your car. I reckon if you can get hold of the older ones and were prepared to pay, no-one would notice that they were newer... but is it worth the hassle? Probs not. I don't the new ones look bad, and any plate looks better than one in bad nick.

Bit of constructive critism from a sparky. If there is any space under them, loosen the battery terminal clamps, open them up with a flat bladed screwdriver and give them a [gentle] tap down so that the terminal is slightly proud of the clamp. It will give a better connection and have a lot less chance of working loose.

Also, put a bit of grease on the clamps / terminals to help prevent corrosion.

Good work so far though, very impressed. cool

John.

I will order the correct grease and put it on at some point. I did open up the terminal clamps and gave them a tap when fitting the battery and they are both as far on as they would go.

Well, I've decided to keep it off the road for another year. I would rather have it running correctly, painted, serviced & off the road, rather than having the welding done and have the car on the road overdue for a service & looking rough.

It is overdue a service by about 1000 miles, the gearbox fluid has started going 'dark' & the oil is no longer a nice 'golden' colour. All this is going to cost a fair bit (for a 14 year old's budget), but I feel that keeping up the car's good mechanical condition is far more important at the moment than having the neccessary welding done & the car back on the road in a rough state.

I can imagine the conversation at school;

What have you got the vaseline for mate?
It's for the car's battery terminals...

I've been spending a lot on bits for the Sinclair recently so there hasn't really been any progress. But my vintage computer sales should see me purchasing all service bits at some point next week.

It has now also developed a problem with low brake pressure - either a £130 master cylinder or a £240 accumulator sphere - but I haven't had time to look into it which one is at fault.
