How do students these days manage to afford new cars these days when they are up to their necks in debt.

An Aygo is £100 odd a month to lease. It's not exactly a Bentley, a part time job more than covers the cost.

Certainly were a few moment I wished I was in the Jag. I don't want to say you've got to make do with what you've got as I'm rather lucky to have what I have.

The Jag's replacement is certainly not as relaxed to drive but it's had many a foray into Europe thus far as you've got to travel a little and enjoy yourself whilst you're young. It still allows me to do what I enjoy but it will never be a Jag! The car was registered in July last year and I've clocked up 42500 miles in it to date. Certainly raises a few eyebrows at the local dealership every time it goes back for yet another service!

eek

That's good going! And I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that it would be interesting if you did document the road trips int he Aygo.

I was about 24 when I sold my absolutely immaculate Series 3 XJ12 in lovely Sage Green.
Took it from 60k to c67k miles, should never, ever have sold it.
Fella is still trying to sell it now for something stupid like £7k...

  • Edit* - found it!

Actually £6k, not 7. Lovely, lovely motor. You haven't lived until you've owned a proper Jaguar.
Not this Euro-Crap they're churning out right now with the latest 'Ingenium' engine.

i Agree You have to try a proper Jag to understand luxury. unless you can afford an old school bentley or roller. to much emphasis on sportyness these days.
I had a XJS and and Daimler sovereign at 21 and 22. it rubbed off i would now much prefer to drive a Cruiser than a super-car.

Great motors.
I'm sure I read somewhere Sir William Lyons almost sacked someone for suggesting some diesel R & M.
Wonder what he'd make of todays 'Jaguar' line up...!?

Earlier in the week, an email popped into my inbox detailing the car's new owners change in circumstances - I was offered first refusal.

A mutually convenient time and date was arranged and the old girl came home with me tonight! Needless to say, something as stupid as its repeat sale will not occur and it's staying with me!

Well done. There are a very few cars I regret parting with but I must admit I do keep looking at one on the car checking site to see if it's still going.

Thanks for the encouraging words, chaps.

It still drove as well as it did when I sold it and it has only gained a couple of thousand miles since I last saw the thing. Only a flicker of the ABS alight initially but that was an iffy sensor that would throw a fit if the car had been sitting. I was informed the car had only been out once in the last 6 weeks.

The owner didn't have a garage and feared the car severely deteriorating over winter if not garaged.

It was loved by the owner but everyone cares/looks after a car in their own way and it doesn't look to have seen a bucket of water in a while and some of the trim has been botched to fit a solar panel battery charger. Daylight also revealed a chipped rear light and some deep scratches on the bonnet and boot of unknown origin. I was also informed of a missing mudflat due to it being "reversed over a football".

I can't be too downhearted as it is all easily put right. I have some trim clips somewhere and a respray was always on the cards at some point in the future.

I have put it into daily use for next few days as it hadn't been run in a while and will stick it in the garage after the weekend with the dehumidifier and heating on to get rid of any damp due to a lack of covered storage since I parted with the car.

I'm sure the Aygo will also appreciate a brief break from 35k a year daily driver duty!

Great news. I've always looked for your username whenever there's been an update to this thread.
I see your point about not being too down-hearted about it, at least it's back in your possession, but i've wondered what standards some people have/set when they say they look after their car...
Let it be a lesson to never sell again!

Ditto. I was hooked from post one. What a fantastic thread and I take my hat off to you, Kamil. I hope my lad (6 at the moment) shows half of the application that you have in whatever he chooses to do.

Hopefully the Jaaaag will be with you for many years to come.

He sold it, and told us a page ago.

Very cool car, and you'll have learned tonnes, but your new car allows you to do a lot more and go more places, plenty of time for unreliable stuff when you're a bit older with a bit more disposable income!
Are you sure you read it?? He bought it back this week!

Great news Kamil, nicely done. As much as I enjoyed reading your epic road trip thread, looking at the Toyota all I could think was 'if only that was the XJ' biggrin
Funnily enough I got a reminder from Facebook today that it's 3 years since I bought the XJS, still miss it! My best mate's XJ40 is still going strong albeit with some scabby patches, currently sitting on around 165k! Any major plans for it in the short term or just letting it sit for a while?
