Here is an intro for the T-5R. It was produced in 1994 so that Volvo could race in touring car championships - a bit like homologation in the rallying where you have to produce a certain number of road going versions of a car to be able to race it.

TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) ran the btcc programme, he also ran the silk cut Jaguar Le Mans cars and the Benetton & Arrows F1 team.

The T-5R was sold by Volvo in 1995 and a limited run of 2,500 cars were produced with consecutive chassis numbers - Volvo made all 2,500 in a row. There are 3 colours : cream yellow, black and olive green - only 200 T-5R's were earmarked for the UK but there are a few extra that were imported.

DECEMBER 07 - as bought

Hi all,

I thought I would start another project thread for my new car which I bought in December 2007. Hopefully I wont be spending as much as I spent on the T4 this time (well I don't mind so much if I keep this one a bit longer, instead of selling it after completion!)
I have wanted a manual 850 T-5R saloon since I was at school, and they seem to be quite hard to find! As soon as I found one by chance on Auto trader I went straight up the next day to see it.
Im 22 now so I can just about afford the Insurance! The only modifications on the car when I bought it were a Re-map and a BSR stainless steel exhaust.

The first things I bought / had done for the car were:
1. One of those silver "850" sill covers as one was missing.
2. A boot seal (split).
3. Set of Genuine Volvo "850" mats - sent from America to my local dealership as they were made in America.
4. One of those grey roof strips as one of them had de-laminated plastic.
5. Genuine Volvo battery.
6. 302 mm discs.
7. New pads.
8. Carriers to take the 302 mm discs.
9. A new genuine (not a recon) caliper from Sweden.
10. A set of genuine "Titan" valves from Volvo - only compatible with the Titan wheels.
11. Set of Goodridge braided brake hoses.
12. 2 Volvo centre caps (with classic logo).
13. New style washer jets.
14. 5 wheels re-furbished at spit and polish.
15. Clear side repeaters.

Here is a pic of my new 302 mm brakes and new caliper.

Here is a picture of one of my re-furbished wheels in my cleaned up wheel well. ("Titan" valve visible)

Cheers mate, I have been a member for a while but never posted - pistonheads is a great forum and interesting to read about other marques as well. I would be more than happy to take you out in my car, handling is great now - just needs a bit more performance to go with it.. smile

February 2008

Next I decided to get the car fully serviced. The car has had two previous owners. The car has been serviced at Kings Volvo in Southampton by the first owner (the garage it was first registered) and then exclusively at BPC Volvo service specialists by the second owner - where it had a brand new engine fitted in 2004.
Here is a list of the work carried out.
1. Complete breather system.
2. Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil & genuine oil filter.
3. Genuine plugs.
4. Genuine Volvo Strut brace.
5. BSR optiflow air filter (induction Kit).
6. n/s fog light & fitting.
7. powerflex poly top mount.

The strut brace is one of the best value for money modifications, really stiffens up the car at the front and stops the car rolling as much when cornering.
Im also pleased with the induction kit which is hardly any louder than standard - except for a nice air sucking noise and a "dump" when changing gear!
Not so sure about the poly top mount though, it is nice to have unless cruising when it makes a bit of a drone!

I hope to have 400bhp by this time next year.. Once I have posted up the rest of the project you will see that I went for handling first, next is brakes and of course more power! wink

Many thanks, I still enjoy the car and I have had it 3 years almost (long time for me!). I like the fact that not many people have these or know what they are so they are a good sleeper.

In May, some of my friends and I headed down to the nurburgring for a holiday. We had a fantastic week and I did several laps with my T-5R. I didn't really time myself, but on my quickest lap I managed just under 10 minutes (9 min 55ish) which I was quite pleased with - not bad for (as then) standard suspension.
I met someone down there from Belgium who also had an Olive T-5R - he took me for a lap of the ring which was under 9 minutes!!! We overtook several Porches, Impreza's etc.
My car was fantastic and covered a total of 957 miles and averaging 27 mpg - including the nurburgring laps which brought the average down to 17ish before heading home! The only thing I noticed is that smoke pourred from my pads after I did 4 laps in a row! There was however minimal fading, probably because they were genuine Volvo discs and pads. Goodyear Eagle F1's dont half squeal on most bends!! Grip fairly well though...

i do like those, the v70 dash is much more pleasant to look at and i am hating the "wood" inserts on the dash, lovely car though and a great colour for one.

August 2008

After getting back from the Nurburgring, I had a couple of modifications ready for my car.
Firstly I bought a set of blue samco's from Don at Kalmar Union. I replaced the coolant and turbo hoses. I also bought a forge dump valve and blanking plate from him.
Secondly, I bought a set of GAZ coilovers. Absoluteley fantastic. Outstanding quality, and the car handles like its on rails.
They are fully adjustable and the car can retain its original ride height if desired. Worth the extra money over some of the other brands in my opinion and as a bonus, they are made in England. They are LEDA coilovers, which GAZ bought the design for when LEDA went out of business a few years ago.
Here are some pictures: I will take some more of the car on a sunny day to show how low I have gone.
