My Volvo 850 T-5R project
Discussion
Long time no update....
Done a few things recently. As some people know a certain red 850R was broken for parts so I had to get a few of the good bits that mine didnt have.
Went for these :
Stoptech BBK with carbotech xp8's. Basically big brembo's and 335 mm discs on alloy rotors with alloy carriers.
and these :
Pro race 1.2's 17" by 8.0"
Put quite a bit of time into the calipers, and they came out like this :
My friend (T4Mark) and brother helped me fit them :
Comparison with my old 302's
Came across a broken track rod end, knew something wasn't right!
Very pleased with the end result! Brakes are noticeably better even at low speeds.. Some more pics :

Very nice car, certainly makes me miss my old T-5 although the T-5R is certainly more special
Cheers, same dna but T-5R looks a bit better cosmetically!VR6 Turbo said:
brilliant I love these threads, were people get out and do it. Have a massive soft spot for turbo bricks to.

Cheers, can do a few bits myself but luckily I have a few friends who can do pretty much anything. I am however excellent at making hot drinks and passing the correct tools! VR
Had my wheel arches rolled yesterday so that my new wider wheels won't rub, used these guys as they come to you : http://www.archenemy.co.uk
Couldn't have been more impressed with the care taken and the end result. The guy that came out to me was Dan as he was the most local to me, used to work for mclaren and it showed through the care taken. Anyway here are a few pics :
Rear arch rolled.
Completed with sealant to stop it rusting.
Front in progress.
Done!
Here are a few pics today after a proper wash:

I'm suprised you're using Mobil 1 though Kerry. I would have thought you'd opt for something like Redline/Gulf/Millers/Fuchs, considering your engine is 'tuned'.
Any who, I hope you're well.
It's the motorsport high temp one, not the standard 0W-40 fully syn that you get from halfords.. The black T4 (if you can make ot out in the blurry pics!) has Millers oil in his built engine, the Mobil was about 1/2 the price. Having said that, once I build my forged engine I will be running it on Silkolene Pro S but that is expensive stuff! Pretty good thanks, yourself? Just got back from the Nurburgring, so thought that I would post up a few pics:

Hi, love the thread. Please could you tell me what length the up-rated drop links are please and where could I purchase some from? They are just what I've been looking for….
Thank you.
Cheers, glad you like the thread. I had a look and I cant find the receipt, but know they were from Sweden. Think they are from here: http://shop.klracing.se/sv/artiklar/stabilisatorst... but I couldn't see them listed. Could also be: www.do88.se? Give them an e-mail, bit hard to navigate but they replied to me in English.Thank you.

Awesome sound and an awesome thread, love the little flame being spat as you drive away from the camera on that clip too :-)
Thanks, it does like to spit flames - especially when hot!Edited by kerryt5r on Sunday 29th December 11:15

Just read through this from start to finish, great thread. I had an 850R back in 2001 then a 2003 V70R in 2005 and the wife bought a V70 D5 R design in 2009 and she still has it. I do like my Volvos.
I met JC Viggen when I went to the Ring in 2009 with Elliott , Tim Williams and a few other Volvo enthusiasts. I had an M3 Evo back then on R888's but still couldnt get around the Ring as quick as Tim or Elloitt. Tim gave me a passenger ride at the Ring that was an experience !
Have you still got the T5R ?
Simon.

Thanks for taking the time to read my thread - I was there at the same time in 2009 and the brakes and wheels are the ones that were probably on Elliot's Red R when you went with those guys! Like the BM's - My brother has had an E46 M3 for a few years now. What do drive now? Yes I do still have the T-5R - haven't used it very much over the last year though, but luckily I have a garage to keep it in these days

Great to hear you still have the Volvo.
I sold the M3 in 2009 and bought a E39 M5 which was a fantastic car. At the same time built myself MK2 Golf 2.0 16v with full cage etc and used this at Lydden. Sold both in 2013 and bought a E60 M5 which I still have. It's been an epic car with no trouble at all 100% reliable. Did a track day at Brands last week and the V10 and SMG came into its own,the sound !
I was thinking of buying this ( keeping the M5 ) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/850-T5R-MANUAL-TRANSMISS...
I looked through your build to give me some inspiration.
Last time I saw Elliot was at The Woodmans pub near Sevenoaks, he gave me a ride in the 850 boy was it quick, felt quicker than my E39 M5 at the time. I think he broke it shortly after.
Do you know the T5R for sale ?
He wants £3200 for it,not looked at it yet.
Simon.
Nice list of owned BM's you have - I have a soft spot for the E39's & the E60's. Lovely cars!I sold the M3 in 2009 and bought a E39 M5 which was a fantastic car. T-5R looks good - 150K is actually quite low mileage these days for an 850. I don't think I have seen that one before, but expect that someone on t5d5 or vpcuk will know it

Awesome car, keep up the good work mate!
Thanks very much - hopefully have an update to post this year if the engine build goes to planWell, I thought that I would bring this thread up to date now that I have made a little progress with the engine build.
Here is how the car stands today:
Bought a set of these (forged H beam con-rods):
Along with all new gaskets, o-rings, bearing sets, piston rings, oil pump, water pump etc etc etc:
Fortunately I managed to obtain a low mileage engine for a low price from a performance Volvo forum, and eventually once I had help available from a good friend we began the long process of stripping down the engine and thoroughly cleaning everything especially oil ways and mating surfaces.
Barry in action!
Then the block went off to our local machine shop for honing. I am missing a lot of pics from around this time (Spring 2015) but I have all of the following progress pics from this year.
Pistons attached to rods:
New rings:
One rod/piston installed:
All pistons/rods installed:
Crank shaft in:
Liquid gasket application:
Intermediate section down:
New oil pump and oil pick up pipe installed:
New water pump on:
Would have bolted the sump on, but missing 2 x o-rings! Will install during the week hopefully and then on to the head strip down next weekend.

O-rings turned up yesterday, so decided to fit the sump. Liquid gasket applied to the intermediate section:
This was then evenly spread out before bolting down the sump to the specified torque setting
And finally, installed the oil cooling jets, new gaskets and backing plates:
That's the bottom end complete! Head strip down commences on Saturday

Fantastic! Although you're kind of making my proud PCV system replacement a couple of weeks ago look a lot less heroic
Haha - that's not an easy job and certainly one that's well worth doing! In all honesty I'm a glorified tea maker (learning, arranging tools and following instructions mainly) and I wouldn't be doing this at all without Baz's help!
Made a bit more progress with the build:
Cam cover and cams removed
Then began the process of stripping the head completely. All valves were removed:
This left us with a completely stripped head - now at the machine shop for skimming:
Will hopefully get the head back later this week in order to start re-assembling it. In the meantime here is a picture of the old exhaust manifold (left of pic) vs. the S60R one that will be replacing it:

Got this package from Volvo:
S60R Head Gasket, C30 T-5 exhaust manifold gasket, Head Bolts, Valve Stem seals, all new seals and gaskets for the head, timing belt kit, thermostat kit, water temp sensor, spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap etc etc
Next, we removed the old valve stem seals. Much harder than it looks..
And managed to fit 2x new Valve Stem seals before calling it a day:
That's it for now. Hopefully get chance to do some more at the weekend
