I've always loved rediculous sound systems in cars and im loving this project.

I fancy doing something like this, perhaps not to the extent you are going to though! I think some decent door & shelf speakers coupled with a nice 12" or 15" sub in the boot will do nicely.

I too have mondeo and i notice that the stock radio unit is quite large and as its 13 years old it has a cassette player lol. How do you fit an aftermarket one with CD for example? (its not really that imortant as long as it has AUX in) And how do you fill the big gap that would be left?
Depending on the Mk and facelift status of your car you can get facia adapters (IE the mk1,2 and pre facelift mk3 are all 1.5din sized holes so you can get a blanking plate that gives you a normal din sized hole, if it is a post facelift mk3/mk4 then it is double din and you can either drop a double din unit straight in or get a facia adapter to give you a 1din space and a cubby hole for CD's etc

Newest updates on this build (Again i know its the anti-PH way as its a diesel being made heavier but as its mad and daft a few people found it interesting)

Now an update with pictures

First the back of the car

As you can see the box does come a fair bit back but i should get my weekly shop in stiff - if not its an estate so has factory fit roof-rails, in this pic you can see the epic, crossover for the two front amps, some of the batterys (the others are below the enclosure) the sub amp and the distribution/wiring

Looking through the drivers door with the seat reclined

Nice shot of the woofers looking in biggrin

A very tight tolerance in the woofers - notice how the centres overlap slightly

A better shot of the overlap

Nice neat work in the enclosure

Rear shot of the woofers, notice the steel re-enforcing the port edge

Close up shot

It has been playing

The playing was a just a test run to make sure it all worked, the amp powered up as it should, all the woofers looked to be moving the same distance but for the volume they were barely twitching, the test run was just off my batterys that were floating at 13.08v at the beginning of the test, after a good 40mins of mild thrashery (only mild as naff all is setup or configured) but the amp did not get warm and the batts only dropped .58 of a volt

The enclosure does not look like it needs much more work tbh as it was playing most of what we threw at it so it will be interesting to see how it gets once everything is setup correctly, we have already had minor steering wheel wobble but it just sounds infinatly more evil than the boot installs of the past, we were expecing Rich having to extend/make a port for the rear chamber but it seems to like playing most of what i listen to (And Rich had a huge amount of fun going through the USB stick of random music i listen to) but the proof will be when the crossovers and epic are set, gain matched and its not just running off battery power

It should be either done or 90% done by the end of the month as it still has a lot to do on it

It will be handed back to me with no trim panels in the boot/side doors (IE as it is now) so time can be taken to do fancy panels if that makes sense

Right update time as a couple of people are still interested

Both the passenger and driver doors have had the doorcard and door lining removed, ready for some sound-deadening

The 6.5 inch mids have been mounted on wood and then mounted to the speaker bracket ready to go back in the door

And a big hole in the spare doorcards

The big hole is for these

Kicker RMB 8inch Mids - old skool now as they were made in 2002 but as far as i can tell never out of the box until i got them a couple of years ago and have never been powered up

Very very mental.

Why are you running 8 12" subs out of intrest? Why not just drop in 2 18" Solo X for example?

Haaha this is going to be mad when it's finished. Make sure to take some videos!!

And to think, I thought my z-5500 system im running for my computer was loud!
Simple answer - i dont like the sound of the kickers

More complicated answer

-You get more cone area from 2 15's than you do from 1 18, same way as you get more cone area with two 12's than 1 15inch woofer so i have more cone area
-The woofers are lower power models so have ligher parts that will react to the music better - they are not built to withstand abuse as they will get 300watts each, woofers designed to withstadn abuse tend to be very heavy tnad take a reasonable amount to get going
-More speakers means more voice coils to disssipate heat meaning that i am less likely to cook them
-multiple points of failure, if one of the woofers dies its not mega expensive to replace it as they are cheap(er) drivers but if i had to replace/recone a bigger heavyweight driver then it would be a painful expense

plus for some reason multi-driver installs just sound so much more effortlesss than one or two larger subs - well to my ears at least

just a quick update

The mids and mid-bass are now in the doors

The Mids are in the factory location so you cant see them but the mid-bass drivers are at the bottom of the door
Behind the doorcard is an enclosure that the midbass units sit in - this stops them fighting with the 6.5's for airpsace

they look a little bit on the massive side dont they

Screen and reversing camera working

next thing to buy is some threaded rod to brace the speaker baffle to the rear wall and some more 0 gauge cable to uprate the power cabling under the bonnet and then testing/crossover setting etc can be done

I have to admit as this car is the anti-PH i was expecting the same level of abuse I got on a mondeo owners site but im glad to see that you guys appreciate madness wherever it comes from

Ians van has been stripped agian so who knows what is going to be running the next time it comes out - BTW that pic is missing the v6 he shoehorned under the bonnet as well. It is quite fun being in the passenger seat of that van (its also quite funny seeing Ian having to fit himself in the van - he is very very tall)

Like i said I cant take any credit for my build as it is being done by a friend, it was decided early on the safest thing for me to do is be the tea-bh

The reversing camera is currently hung out of the boot but it will eventually fit at the topof the rear screen in the same housing the brake lights fit into and yes it is a mirror as well - bit pointless for me but it is also used as an output for video from my headunit

It is covered in filler dust tho

Now a shot of the passenger seat - this is as far back as it goes, im glad i have a short Mrs

And the tweeter builds that sit on the A-pillars are finished

Get it back in a couple of weeks if all goes to plan

it will still need months of box modification to get the best out of it but that is how it goes with 6th order enclosures

at the moment the rear wall is having another 18mm layer of MDF added for strength (think that makes it 4 layers now)

so here is a video of the car - admitedly it is only running at low power here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvqJUU11ghU

Until it is setup properly and it is running off a battery charger i was not going to risk playing it full tilt

BTW when i talk and the music is on i am shouting directly at the camera and the distortion is the mic in the camera

it is quite daft using Dolly Parton isnt it biggrin but if you cant laugh at yourself when you have something like this then there is something very wrong

the only issues so far are

1. its not turned up or wired into the batterys so dont know what it will do at full tilt yet
2. due to the components being so old one of the tweeter seems to drop out but i think this is my fault for not storing them right when they were out of the car - we shall see though
3. when turned up as far as i can take it it makes my rear view screen beep like mad as it thinks someone is pressing its buttons

As it was valeted a couple of days ago so is now clean (for a change) i took some pics of it while it is in my garage on charge to keep the batterys conditioned, wont bore you with lots of individual pics but will give you a link to the gallery - http://samuelellis.cozywebhost.com//gallery2/main....

BTW i love my uprated rear springs they make it look like it has nowt in the back and yes my garage is only just longer than the car, can fit another car by its side tho so its not all that bad biggrin

well it got taken for a run in the pennines a few days ago so i could push the install without annoying people too much

Video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOtp0Go3kQM

as it stands its bedding in nicely, got the thing serviced plus had the discs and pads changed allround, now it stops surprisingly well considering what its carrying, acelleration and handling are not too badly comprimised as long as i remember its a big barge of a thing and its still giving me around 35 to 37mpg

On the downside the video screen on my rear view mirror is now really starting to suffer as the front has started to come away - ah well it still works andi appear to have either a faulty acrive crossover or a dodgy RCA as i loose the speakers on one side of the car when everything is turned up - todays job is to replace the RCA cable and see if that sorts it

Then i will have to take a break from fiddling so i can finish moving into my house

As i said it is utterly utterly pointless and stupid having my friend build this thing

but thats why i like it, plus as i said its not doing bad on fuel economy, next thing on the list is to blank off the EGR valve to claw back a bit more and to stop it being a smokey beast on full throttle boost

the next thing to do install wise is swap out that RCA cable and see if it solved the problem then measure the rear and front chambers so i can start working out what they are tuned to/what port lenght to change the tining

who says that a car with a big installs are impractical

Look it took stuff from my house renovation to the tip with room to spare

Plus all i can say is that Ford really know how to make a good drive as i had to drive it to Cheshire a couple of days ago and around the twisties it was still a good drive once it was up to speed
