They don't make 'em like that any more.
(I'd be checking the scrappies for a full leather interior)
I rather like the cloth. It's in excellent condition, very period and very different to the standard black leather you see in BMWs these days.(I'd be checking the scrappies for a full leather interior)
Similarly lowering the car or a change to big wheels would transform the image.
In very few years slamming and blackboarding will be very old hat and the cars ruined in such a way will be only fit for the scrappy.

These mid 90s BMW 17 inch cross spokes would look amazing on it. Not sure of the "Style" number.
Style 5's I believe! Very nice car!!! I remember being with my dad and test driving an identical 735i when I was about 10... We loved it, then my mum drove it and it scared the crap out of her and they settled for a 525i
What a wonderful car!
I remember my father's old car, he bought it new in 1982, a 733i, Grey exterior with Oxblood leather, and a 5speed manual, it was $36,000 canadian at the time. It was a great car and he drove it for the next 20 years as his daily driver, until he ended up buying a Volkswagen Passat ughhh...
Before buying it, he had compared the Mercedes Benz 380SE which was around $40,000 canadian at the time, and looked at the Jaguar XJ12 which was $30,000 canadian. At the time, a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit was around $55,000 canadian.

Quick update.
Dropped the beast into my garage on the Monday before Le Mans. Major problems with overheating and brakes (nothing too important for a long drive to sunny France then!)
It's an independent Alfa Romeo specialist (they look after my 156) but the main guy there used to run an E23!
They kept the car overnight and diagnosed a problem in the cooling system with the viscous clutch. Part arrived Tuesday and was fitted straight away.
The brake issue was a problem with the actuator sphere (no, I'd never heard of one either) BMW wanted £300 for this part, they are available for under £100 elsewhere but would take longer to arrive!
Le Mans ferry was booked for 8am Thursday, I'm in Manchester.
Luckily, the part arrived Wednesday morning, was fitted immediately (Thanks John, MVC Alfa Manchester!) picked the car up lunchtime and set off down south.. car running like a dream!
Gave the car a quick wash at my Mum's house in Stratford Upon Avon on the way down. The electric windows stopped working!
At least we still had a sunroof or reasonably efficient air con!
Car felt great on the trip. Only downside to the weekend was not being allowed into the display area of the Classic British Welcome at Saint Saturnin because we 'Weren't a classic!"
Some cameraphone snaps..
Waiting for Portsmouth- Le Harve ferry
Campsite
In good company
Picking up fuses to try and sort electric window problem
Fueling up at Arnarge for journey home

Very nice car mate!
I love old BMs, had plenty of them, my favourite BMW shape of all time is the E34 5 Series although there arnt many old BMs I dont like, I had one of these years back although it was a 728, I love the M30 lumps especially the 3.5, bombproof motors, had about 5/6 manual 535i e34s over the years also had a M5 3.6 e34 I sold a while back on here, hope you enjoy your car, good to see someone who appreciates a decent classic motor

I also bought the BMW Model Price List for 1983, from eBay.
When I've a little more time, I'll work out exactly what my car would have cost new.
My basic price was £18830 in 1983. For reference, my parents 3 bed semi detached house in a decent area cost £13000 just 5 years earlier!
The air conditioning in my car was £1601! Looks like this was a pretty well specced example. I think it my have been a demo car for the first couple of months of it's life.

Not been a great week for the big green beast.
Brakes haven't felt right since new pads were fitted a few weeks ago. Coolant light popped back on a month after a full service.
Went to my garage who told me 'brakes are fine' and no coolant leak anywhere. Topped up the coolant and put some stuff in to plug any small holes.
Driving home, car really didn't feel right, no push or go. Could sense a burning smell so pulled over. Grey smoke was pouring from the inside of offside wheel. Guess it's a sticking calliper?
Also- the engine was HOT. The temp gauge was off the scale The car wouldn't start for another 90 minutes when it had cooled a little. Even then the engine block was still unbelievably hot (and hour and a half after I turned it off)
Luckily, was a couple of hundred metres from where the car lives, so pushed it home.
Not sure if the thermostat is ropey or there's a blockage somewhere.
Back to the garage tomorrow. Not sure if these two problems are related?!
Leaving for Le Mans on Wednesday. Hope it's in a healthy green German barge!

The good news is you've now fixed the two most common problems - happens to them all.
Good luck and enjoy.
