shame to see that many defects on the shell after all of the hard work elsewhere, does seam that when problems like this crop up you find out just how good a bodyshop is.

Was the £4k just to paint or did it include supplying and fitting the cage? I've been quoted about £2600 just to fit the cage in my E36

Some of those examples would be unacceptable to me; for example the dirt left under the seat cross member and the runs on the cage bars, but some of the other examples suggest that you may be perhaps expecting too much from a 4k paint job. In my experience complete perfection comes at a cost of around 6k and includes stripping the entire car back to bare metal.

If the paint is flaking off easily this suggests the prep was bad or paint flash times weren't adhered to,and the resolution to that isn't cheap or easy. I wish you well with a resolution to the defects!

No the £4000 was just for painting the shell, the cage was already fitted.

Yes granted maybe I am being fussy but then again I think I should be given the effort we have put in so far, I could live with a couple of little bits yes but it's not the case unfortunately, in terms of the paint flaking off it seems that the surface was not keyed or primered

For £4k just to paint I think you have every right to be fussy.

hope you get it all sorted out without too much grief

On a few bits I thought perhaps you was being picky but at that price I feel you are well within your rights, seems mad how they just seem to ignore you, surely he will want to sort it out so he can get paid for what he did.

Do you have all the panels back aswell, doors etc?

Yes I've got all the panels back now, it's been over 3 weeks now and no contact, so obviously not bothered about loosing £4k ???

Anyway I've got Chris from finishline coming to take a look tomorrow to see what he can do, I'll update once he has been

Well after waiting 3 weeks for Chris from finishline to have a look at my car, he came tonight only to tell me he couldnt book it in until next July!!!!!!

I give up, just going to throw it together as it is now, won't ever be the car I wanted it to be but I can't keep dragging on with this now as its coming up for 2 years

Right, the shell is now for sale.

The only way i will ever be happy with the shell now is if i get it resprsyed again, it will be ideal for a race car but not good enough for the show car i was going to build, and i can justify spending another load of money to finish a car which i will never be happy with.

Aside from this, the project has already been going for nearly 2 years and ive lost patience with it, just want a car that i can drive rather than look at in bits!

So once the shell is sold i will now buy a nice tidy M3 Evo and gradually over the next few months fit my nice new and modified bits and just get a bolt in cage fitted.

There will be a few more bits available in time such as fire extinguisher, varlet red top 30, cartek kill switch etc which i will no longer require.

It's a real shame this has happened but I bet everyone out here is rooting for you to put the car together and enjoy it. See if you can fall back in love with it and take the paint job on the chin knowing there's a whole car there to enjoy. Seriously - build it!

Also cover your arse with the paint co. let them know legally you are not satisfied with the job and will not be paying them. Take advice...

Well i havent been on here for a while, after trying to sell the shell but having no joy, i spent some time looking for a company who could sort out my car.

Finally i found a place in Woking called Ambassador coachworks, they are an approved bodyshop for Aston Martin and deal in high end work.

Anyway after popping down to see them and being shown the facilities etc i trailored the car down to them.

Here are some pics from last week:-

What they found was that the majority of the shell had not been primered, in fact only the outside of the doors, bootlid and bonnet had been primered, the rest had just been keyed and sprayed over!

Anyway they have removed as much of the old paint as poosible, the car will then be primered and resprayed.

I will be popping down tomorrow to see the progress and i will post some more pics then.

In the meantime i have been getting everything ready for the cars return.

All bits on racking

Engine on trolley

All powder coated bit laid out

Sterring rack and prop all cleaned and ready to go back on

Painted diff casing with 3.91 crown and pinion waiting to go in

Looks like it's going to be much better painted by the new place. Some tasty suspension mods to go on aswell.

Glad you chose to stick it out.

Great - I'd been hoping you'd find a way to get the force back on this one. Good luck and keep use all up to date!

I'm pleased to see you have decided to keep the car. I have been in a similar situation myself where I have been building a car at great expense but have 'almost' lost the motivation.

Problem is you'll never get back all that time/effort and money that has gone into it. It usually is better to see the project through to completion even if it takes a little longer than planned.

I think you would have regretted selling the car had it sold.

keep up the good work, I am certain it shall be done to a very high standard, the build looks great thus far.

I've just sat and read through this thread (with one break for a lecture hehe) and was devastated when I read that you had given up, and then relieved when I carried on reading! Although I've had no experience in any kind of project like this, let alone one with such attention to detail, I can still imagine how good it will feel when it's all finished and you have an amazing example of an E36 that you've built yourself.

You made the right choice.

clap
