I've seen a couple of these, it does look quite nice but imagine what it would be like with a supercharger.

Look's lovely
With regards to the supercharger comment above I have never seen a supercharged 600 bike engine myself lol. I imagine if you put a new style 1000cc bike engine in it however could give it a mental power to weight ratio weighing in at under a 1/4 of a tonne redface

We actually did run a bespoke TTS performance centrifugal supercharged CBR600 in both 2008 and 2009, both engines were indeed very powerful but there were quite a few issues. The main problem with forced induction for FS cars is the mandatory 20mm restrictor we have to run, through that restrictor there is only so much air you can physically fit through. There comes a point where your supercharger/turbo can't pull anymore air in and the system chokes, at that point the supercharger is just creating a massive amount of heat for no performance gain. Then the next issue comes in the form of reliability, the complexity (not to mention the added weight) of retrofitting a supercharger to an engine that wasn't designed for it, creates more potential headaches along the line. Most teams focus on tuning their intakes and exhaust geometry (using wav ram theory, etc) to get a reliable engine.

We'd love to run a 1000cc, but we are limited to 600 unfortunately. The supercharged engine cars we ran came in at around the 500bhp/per tonne mark! However it's quite difficult with a car that weighs 220kg's to put all that power down through its relatively small contact patch.

Here's a picture of our 2008 car..

are you allowed to modify the internals like camshaft, valves, inlet, stuff like that?

Yea one of the great things about FS is the freedom you get with the engines. We're allowed to modify as much as we like as long as we stay within the 600cc limit and use the manditory 20mm restrictor. Quite alot of teams heavily modify their engines, from variable inlet geometry, variable valve timing, to complete custom built engines (In 2001 Western Washington University even made their own 554cc V8, typical Yanks!). These are normally the teams that tend to have problems in the competition, 8 months from conception to reality doesnt give alot of time for development and testing. Our philosophy is to keep the engine as reliable as possible, Honda have put alot of money into its development so why mess with it. We do alot of development with our inlet and exhaust system though to maximise engine efficiency and improve performance, we managed to get 100hp from our engine last year even though we have the 20mm restrictor.

That's quite cool, I think I should chuck a couple of those engines in my car, I've only got 70hp and could use the extra grunt hehe

Get yourself a JP4 from a C2 VTS, that should give it a bit more poke!

Right then....

Finally we got chance to get a few photos of some of the parts we have already received and that are sat waiting to go onto the 2011 car.

First of all, we have our Öhlins TTX 25 FSAE dampers. These dampers weigh approximately 448g without the spring and are 4-way adjustable with independent high and low speed adjustments for compression and rebound. Many thanks to Russ at Mick Gardener Racing www.mickgardnerracing.com, not only did he supply us with the dampers and a range of springs to play with, but he took time out of his very busy schedule to come up to the uni and give us a hand testing the car on our 4-post rig.

Next up, the brakes! For the front we have gone with AP Racing 4 piston radial mount calipers, AP Racing 15mm bearing mount master cylinder and AP Racing sintered road/race pads. For the rear we have chosen AP Racing 2 piston radial mount calipers, AP Racing 14mm bearing mount master cylinder and AP Racing organic road/race pads. Many thanks to the guys at AP Racing www.apracing.com.

Finally, a few of the Goodridge water, oil, and brake connectors we received from the guys at CAM Auto www.camauto.com, many thanks!

We've got loads more parts to photograph so we will get some more pics up soon. We have a fairly intensive build period ahead of us so things will start to progress quite quickly over the next few weeks.

Thanks for looking,

Team HARE

Fair enough, we've never had any problems with T45 welds but then we've always been careful with a preheat/postheat, but if your sections are mandated then obviously not much point.
I was going to say, I presume this is down to wall thicknesses? Been TIG welding T45 cages for a few years now and not seen/heard of any failures like this? WRC cars for example are a full T45 construction (well, the ones we supplied were!)

nah, if im doing an engine swap i will do it properly and put in a peugeot 406 3.0 V6, a few C2s have them running around 220hp, anyway going off topic, its a cool little project you guys are running.

Hello PHers, time for quite a substantial update. Apologies for not keeping this up to date but it has been a manic 6 weeks completing the build. After many lost hours of sleep and the consumption of many cans of Relentless here's an illustrative insight into the build of our car the IFOUR-11:

Laser profiled chassis rails, sandblasted and prepped for welding.

Roll hoops also ready for jigging.

Team leader getting into the zone whilst welding the spaceframe

Perfect fit for the adjustable pedal box.

Spaceframe completed, being prepped for paint.

Should be able to get the hubs & diff casing out of that we think biggrin

Rear upright being machined, weighing in at less than 1kg smile

Front and Rear uprights, done!

Rapid prototype rear hub and drawing ready to be sent for manufacture at our sponsors David Browns.

Rear hub back from manufacture.

Hub assembled with Brake disc and Bobbins.

Diff carrier and eccentric chain tensioner ready to weld into frame

Diff casing, with Quaife internals.

Diff with sprocket assembled

Fuel tank, kindly manufactured by our sponsor Denso, then wrapped with heat barrier supplied by Nimbus Motorsport!

Wishbone inserts ready for bonding into the Carbon Fibre wishbones.

The basis of our intricate double barrel throttle body.

Exhaust manufactured with dummy engine in place.

Exhaust bend detailing, validated using extensive CFD analysis.

Exhaust system in situe with Carbon Fibre Blue flame can.

Our engine after a good clean and autosol, A CBR600 F4-i engine.

Our SLS air intake system primed, designed by us and kindly manufactured by Redbull.

SLS intake painted.

SLS intake assembled, with Throttle body and custom Team HARE fuel rail.

Engine fitted into Spaceframe!

Rear corner assembly! carbon tubes kindly supplied by our friends at Tricast

During the long and arduous process of producing a mould buck to create our Carbon Fibre nose cone.

OZ Formula Student specific rims, very lightweight!

Small trip to Hoosier to collect our tyres for the competition.

Wow, some of that hardware is the mechanical equivalent of Pippa Middleton's arse!

lick

You guys are building a hell of a curriculum vitae there. With work like that, you will really stand out from the crowd. Doing my old Uni proud. cool

Looks good, I did FS a few years back - was good fun, if a little frustrating at times.

So much temptation to whip the 20mm restrictor off the engine, although the rest of the drivetrain wouldn't cope for long frown

I started to develop a continuously variable length intake system, although reliability concerns stopped further development - which was a shame.

Many similar projects have ran here before, for several years. Reliability of the system however, meant it never found it's way onto a vehicle. German team UAS Kiel seen below sucessfully use a variable intake system.

The car in its current specification will do 0-60mph in approximately 4 seconds, providing it's dry.

We have karting events throughout the academic year to determine driver credentials smile
