I have searched for related topics but not found any. My 2000 996 had a minor service and they reported a leaking/failing rear main seal(RMS). Now as far as know the seal is not a servicable component and should therefore last the life of the car or 5yrs by trading standards. Does this then mean that it will be covered by my warantee or will it be a case of badgering Porsche UK for a goodwill replacement. The car has full OPC service history and has always been under warantee. I bought the car 11 months ago at which point it had a full major service and no problems were reported.

Any advice or info would be appreciated esp. if you have had such a problem and made a warantee/goodwill claim.

Thanks friends

I have a 996 Cab 99 and this had the same problem, my OPC changed it as they said it was a problem that Porsche were aware of on the early 996. Speak to them and see what they say, if no luck perhaps speak to Porsche UK and see what there view is??

Mine was changed and they also noticed the gearbox was faulty at the same time (I had no idea, no noise nothing).

cheers

This severe problem affects Boxsters and the POS 996

I concure with lee-harpers comments. Give them the opportunity of honouring their brand values. If they say no then you progress with mounting your arguement re it not being a wear and tear componant and trading standards.

Even if you had a 1 year used car warrantee PCGB have a tendency to flick the V sign at these kinda late claims. Suggest you do not give up at the first hurdle. 3.4 Litre units are well know for this issue and many PH threads have touched upon it in the last month.

I was in my Barber's (in Barnet, ) today, he noticed the 993 outside, we got chatting about Porsche, blah, blah, he then said another customer who has boxster (1yr old) said that the engine bay is covered in oil, and muttered something about a malfunctioning seal, when he took it to his OPC, they casually said, "oh, yeah, it's a common problem on these models, bring it in and we'll sort it". It's fairly obvious that this is a design flaw and is cropping up more and more. Why don't Porsche do a recall on this problem?.

I dont think a recall will ever happen for this as there is no safety implication + costly fix. So Porsche wait for the poor customer to come in with the issue already manifest in the car before fixing. This way they save themselves huge costs ? Sad ut probabaly true. I take my 996TT in on the 10th June - I'll start a thread if they give me any jip !

...what are you taking the TT in for? Can't be a RMS problem as this doesn't fail in the TT as far as I'm aware.

...just an update. Notts OPC put in a goodwill claim to Porsche GB for me without an quibbles which was nice. However Porsche GB have come back with an offer of 50% labour 100% parts costs. I'm not entirely happy with that as it is an obvious problem and i shouldn't be penalised finacially for it. The service lady at notts OPC said that it would have more clout if i contacted them direct....i'll keep you updated!

BTW just to add insult to injury the new warantee effective of 1st june will cover RMS along with suspension components that weren't previously covered.

What the hell are Porsche GB thinking? This is a known problem, so much so that they are amending the terms of their warranties. I've heard of other people who have had their RMS's replaced outside of warranty without any cost. Clearly the person handling this at Porsche GB is an ex-car salesman which just goes to show you can take the man out of the sales yard but...

UPDATE

...aftera phone call to the head honcho at Porsche GB my RMS has been replaced as 100% goodwill claim.

I just laid it on thick whilst on the phone by saying how i had bought 2 porsches in the past from OPC's, kept them under warantee and always had them serviced by them. I pointed out that this was done for peace of mind if there was ever a problem with the car esp. a well documented fault it would be sorted. Also the fact that the new warantee will cover the RMS problem indicates that they are aware of a design flaw.

So all set for Le Mans now.......bring it on

....oh and the clutch was only 50% worn so didn't need changing. Saves a few more pennies
