After my recent jaunt to the motor show I was disappointed with the new Tuscan and began to seriously contemplate a Boxster S (and yes, I appreciate all the differences). There was a nice anniversary edition on the stand which took my eye.

My question is, I recall having read that the current model is due to be replaced / revised at some point but I wasn't sure when this would be and whether any change would impact residuals. Also, if I went and ordered one this w/end, what's the delivery time?

Thanks

Nick

The replacement is due sometimes next year. It's expected to be an evolution of the current car rather than a brand new one. Supply will always be limited so residuals shouldn't suffer much if at all
Some people looking to order 987 and buy a used 986 whilst waiting

Highly unlikely you will now be able a get a 550 limited edition but worth a try

no-one seems completely sure when the revised boxster comes out although the probability is end 04/beginning 05.

Residuals will be affected but I doubt terminally because there`s already a long waiting list for the new one and they`re unlikley to hit the open market until late `05.

I think the 550`s are sold (but I could be wrong) and the delivery times vary between dealers but I`d aim for about 6/8 weeks at the mo`.

I`d go for a s/hand facelift S as the safest bet.

I agree with the others. Buy a face-lift Boxster S second hand and order the new shape one right away.

I saw one of those limited edition Boxster 550s yesterday and it does look great. It is the same colour as the Carrera GT and the dark silver wheels look fab. I bet you could find one at list somewhere even if it is technically used. I would have to think long and hard about getting one with the brown leather that some come with!

Thanks all.

I'll go to my nearest OPC this weekend and have a look. Shame if the 550s are gone now as that is what had begun to swing me - I quite liked the (relative) individuality of it.

Do read this week's autocar "buying cars" section...it illustrates what a rip off OPCs are on used cars...

Nick,

The Boxter S is a great car with many things going for it. The handling is superb, the engine sounds great (especially with the optional sports exhaust), resale values are best in class, running costs are very reasonble and they break down far very infrequently.

I just think that coming from a TVR Tuscan, you may find the performance rather lacking. Maybe a GT3 which has 360/380 BHP maybe more to your liking. I'm not knocking the Boxter which is a great car but a TVR Tuscan is a seriously fast car and a GT3 or maybe a 996 TT maybe more to your liking.

I dare say that you are 100% right. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that I could get either of those with my current budget of around £45-50k.

I understand your liking of a Boxster S over TVR. If you have your heart set on the Anniversary I suggest you try Porsche agents in countries where convertibles are less popular, buy there and ask for a RHD – they are most reasonable. EG Scandinavian + Finland. Less expensive to buy abroad as high local VAT (which you don’t pay) makes for lower base retail price which you do pay. You pay the 17.5 UK VAT at customs as you bring the car in to the country.

Have you considered a 993 turbo?
