Great thread guys - far too much good information to read when I should be working.... Just to add IMO that the "basic" Boxster is a great machine. If I could get in it comfortably (too tall) I would have had one like a shot, instead of my 996 C4 Cab. My son bought a 2005 987 2.7 with full history for £12.5k and it's superb.

Yes the purists give you earache about a proper Porsche but, comparing the 996 with his 2.7, the Box is more alive, has more boot storage, ride is less affected by our cr*p pot-holed roads, IMHO looks better(!) and is just more fun! Having said that, I love my C4 as well! Best of luck to OP with his 986.

Can you turn the passenger airbag off (child seats) or was 'isofix and airbag switch' an option on these cars ever?

Unfortunately not, The 986 Boxster doesn't have either Isofix or an airbag switch. If you need to use a child seat you have to have a deactivation bar fitted which isn't cheap. The bar itself is about £200 but then you have to get it fitted by either an OPC or specialist as it needs to be activated on the ECU (probably another 150 quid).

You then either have the choice of buying an extortionate Porsche car seat which has the correct fitting to mount into the deactivation bar OR buying the belt clip from Porscheshop for £20 and using any brand of car seat.

Bar and clip are available here http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_baby...

Essentially engaging the belt clip into the bar switches off the passenger airbag and unclipping it does the opposite. I have the deactivation bar fitted in my 996 which works OK, but luckily for me it was fitted by a previous owner...

Looks like it could be a winner. Genuine long term doting owner and full OPC service history. I'd be a little wary of its lack of use in recent years - these engines like to be run regularly, but otherwise I'd be on it like a shot if I was looking for an early Boxster.

You need a passenger airbag deactivation bar (search on Porscheshop and you'll soon find it). They cost a couple of hundred quid and can be fitted by a decent Indy specialist. Don't get ripped off by an OPC who will charge you a fortune to fit one. There was no switch option on early Boxsters as far as I know. Not sure about Isofix.

Im in the hunt for one too. I hope to buy in the next 6 weeks with a buy price of £6-7k. I drove a 2001 3.2s today. Not quite as fast as I was perhaps hoping but a good short drive nonetheless.

How wet is a wet carpet? The ones I have seen felt a fraction damp behind the seat but certainly not sodden. Some I have seen also have had a limescale like substance on the sold internal roof bar - signs of a longer term leak?

My 'beef' with Porsche, and the 2.5 Boxster is simply that a 2 seater roadster, with a flat 6 engine of 2.5 litres capacity with Porsche heritage could, and should, have been faster. That's all.
And was a laughable 40k new!

Looks like a nice one OP although not the colours for me, but that's just personal opinion. not worth for you I would suggest but first mod for my seal/black S was to swap amber rear lights for clear, fronts were expensive but fortunately mine had xenons. Going clear made the car look a but 5years younger bizarrely

I remember when they came out. Porsche was certainly laughing – all the way to the bank.

There was a 12-month wait and people were paying premiums over list.

The £45k 2.5 Boxster was common. Hard to believe in retrospect. It does show how new prices have come down though.

It was crazy. I was hoping to pick up a used boxster a few years after they came out but they hardly seemed to depreciate at all (was it not one of the slowest depreciating cars ever?)

Can anyone advise the standard size and spec tyres on 17" wheels? Are other brands/tyres ok? And could anyone advise a price ballpark figure for N rated Porsche spec 17" all round?

Fronts according to my manual are: 205/50/ ZR17 Rears are 255/40 ZR17

For ballpark figures go to www.blackcircles.com and use the configurator, will take 2 mins.

Was it really? I remember the S in 2006 could be bought for £18k (£38+ new), so I assumed it has been constantly depreciating...

We are talking late 90s. An early Boxster would return nearly all your money after 12 months of moderate use.

The last set of tyres I had on the Boxster cost £240 for the fronts and £260 for the rears iirc.

I remember thinking that they were pricy until I has to replace the rears on the 968 a few months back thanks to an errant nail.

I know I don't 'need' them but at the stage I don't know which tyres work well and which ones don't. Thanks for the tyre recommendation by the way wink

Ps thanks for all the other responses to my tyre question.

Next question - does the 986 have any known box problems? One dealer had one with a borked 2nd gear.

If the Falken FK452's fit then they are a very good tyre for a modest outlay.

Very popular on lots of performance cars - I had a set on my 350z and I also have a set on my current car, BMW 130.

I work with the guy that owns this car and can confirm it's immaculate and has been very well looked after. the reason for the low mileage is that his Mrs works with him and so they used their S4 to commute in to work together until he got a company car

Gents,

On the subject of tyres whether I keep or sell the car it will need a set soon, I knew this when I bought it, so apart from the FK452's what else is worth considering that wont break the bank ....

Blackcircles quoting £510 for all four fitted which I thought was ok ....

Any other suggestions ??
