I've had a recent quote for a rebuild to 3.6. It's a big commitment obviously and buys you a whole 986 again quite comfortably if you are that way inclined.
Hi,
May I ask roughly how much the quote was for, by who, and how much hp they were estimating. I thought Harlech did 3.5 litre conversions and Parr a turbo conversion? Feel free to pm me if the info is sensitive.

Many thanks!

Will it be low-end Boxster money if you include the work that needs doing, though?

Definitely not and judging by the windows in the same position, guessing they haven't bothered fixing the window regulators. There were a lot of electrical faults with the car including roof.

Really decent input on this thread.

As a result of that I've put a deposit down on a 2003 986 S this afternoon. Pick up
Monday will add pics then. Not quite full on poverty pork but at 8500 a lot of car for the cash and perfect for the summer.

Thanks for all the advice made buying a no brainer.

My latest poverty Pork, had it a few months now and it's been excellent

Polar Silver with Metropole Blue leather and blue hood. It has 68k miles, FSH (6x Porsche stamps & massive file of paperwork), MO30, PSM, Bose, Cruise, CD Changer, Sports Seats, 911 throttle body, Hayward & Scott exhaust bypass.. Not quite the spec of my previous Anniversary model but I love the colour and sound of this one so much more

My first purchase for it has been a BootBag for my summer camping trips. I will be getting the car up to the guys at Revolution ASAP for their 111 point check and to sort out any imminent issues they find. On the horizon will be a clutch and IMS upgrade, then a full suspension refresh

I can only see myself selling it for a TVR

Do you sense that it needs a new clutch and suspension refresh?

My 2.7 on standard suspension feels sweet and although impossible to be truly objective about this, I really cannot say that it is any less tight than it was when I bought it brand new in 2002 and my mileage is double yours. Perhaps the stiffer M030 takes more of a beating on the UK's rougher roads.....

The clutch on the other hand.... I believe that I get the feeling that my friction plate material is worn there just isn't quite so much 'cushioning' on offer (although a lot of that effect will come from the springs in the dual mass flywheel). I would say the the feeing that I'm looking for is similar to the feeling that one gets when fresh brake pads are fitted - they just instantly feel better! However, as there's no sign of slippage, I'm happy to continue running with my original clutch.

P.S. If you haven't already considered this, the 997 shifter is a very good upgrade on the 986 and another item worth thinking about is the condition of your front engine mount. I changed mine for the first time at 80k kms and I think it's time to do it again.

I tried a 2.7 yesterday and was underwhelmed. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I didnt find it fun at all. It was very capable and no doubt would be brilliant on track, but for rhe road it lacked excitement and theatre , even when pushing on.

Is a 3.2 more exciting or just the same but quicker?
If you're looking for excitement get a MK2 MR2 on ditchfinders. Oversteer in any place at any time, especially in the wet. Keeps you awake.

Anyone know of any 'good' Boxster S for sale at the moment?

Thinking of making an appearance into Poverty Pork territory this summer and looking for a decent car at knock down prices.

Ebay cars all look like a bag of spanners.

Just gone through this process. Anything in between 6-8k that is in decent nick goes in within a few days of being advertised.

Below 6 I wouldn't bother. Over 8k plenty of choice you just can't hang around when you find the right car. I was test driving the one I've just bought within hours of it hitting autotrader and the salesman was taking enquiries whilst out on the test drive. Absurd value these cars at the moment.

I've had both and don't think there is any significant difference. If anything the later car is better as it seems to have a higher quality thicker leather on the dash. The fixings in the interior are the same. I know you seemed to have a downer on some of the silver painted interior parts on a 550 but noticed you started to comment on 986/987 painted interiors in a different light. Those painted parts are really no different than what you could already order from the factory. On an S the power difference and delivery is negligible to un-noticeable.

Re the IMS bearing, another way to look at it is that you will at some point in the near future perhaps be doing a clutch change and can attend to that then. Had I known what I do now I would have changed the clutch on my 2000 S, bought at 58k, as it was pretty stiff.

3.2[0] S

Year 20[00]

20[,000] miles

£20k imported with VAT paid with a bit of negotiation.

LHD always wins as you are closer to the intake.

Stick some ambers on and your only concern would be that you seem to lose the headlight ambers with litronics but that's worth it surely?

A centre console delete kit would be the icing on the cake and there you have it.... a future classic in the making....

Perhaps not true poverty pork but I would prefer this to a new 981 so it is a bargain!
