Joined the club last weekend. 2000 W reg Silver Boxster 2.7 with 73k for £4500. Not a full service history but a fair few receipts, and a year's MOT with no advisories. Worth the punt I feel, especially after running an E92 M3.

Jobs to be done - air con not working (not that fussed but will get it sorted), full service & sort out the mis-matched rubber before autumn/winter. Reasonably handy with the spanners so aiming to do all of this myself.
Hang fire on the Air Con. Do you really think you need it?

I've had a Boxster and I never used the AC. Unless you dont want to get the roof down?

Certainly not 'poverty pork' anymore!!

Good luck with the sale - car looks great!
Wow Cat D 996 3.4 - £25k I thought I was in the more hype and plain silliness thread for a minute.

Certainly not poverty Pork.

Nelka, if you are lucky the a/c will be just leaky condensers; leaves get in the cooling ducts and the debris builds up between the radiators and the condensers rotting the aluminium. Fixing them with new ones is an easy DIY job. The a/c is nice to have if you are doing motorway miles on a boiling hot day or if you drive in the winter - demisting is much quicker with a/c available.

Oh, and PICS!!

I hear you, it's not a massive priority & I haven't missed it so far (500 miles in 10 days). Living in Scotland probably helps!

Hope so on the condensers, if it's anything more than them & a regas it may just get left......

I'll get some pics up this weekend, need to give it a clean!

Gave the car a good clean & polish, it's came up pretty well. Service next weekend, got all the stuff from Eurocarparts yesterday & then new tyres!

Any recommendations for tyres? It's a budget (ish!) car, considered going for Kuhmo's, but to be honest it's one area I don't really mind spending on. The new Conti Sport 5 seem to be winning all the tests.

I run P Zero, it's a fairly emotive subject but they seem good to me.

P-zeros get a really bad rep, particularly on porsches (despite having a n-rating) - have a google (I was tempted too as they are reasonably priced in Porsche sizes)
I've always sworn by ContiSport Contacts, and an Evo tyre test win is a pretty good endorsement.

I was on a trackday a while back, in the pi$$ing rain and gave a passenger lap to a seasoned trackday chap, and he couldn't believe the grip I was getting with the Conti's.

I can only go by my experience, 20k miles with regular quick runs over snake pass, never had an issue.

No track days granted, but as I said everyone has an opinion!

Has anyone been to see this yet? It was up for sale a few months back at £4.5k now £4k.

Could be a good buy.

I've also been looking at this ad. Seems a good buy, but what on earth did the dealer buy it in for - £2000? Must be something wrong.

Is the bonnet open or out of line?

But for that money it doesn't look awful.

Yes, it's on the safety catch. My lid requires a firm press to fully close. Dropping it just leaves it on the catch.

They must have bought it in cheap to give it a £6k screen price. Wonder how much work it would need to come up to the standard of the average £9/10k (bottom of the market) 996's that are for sale.

At 170k miles it's got to be considered a good advert for the reliabilty of an early 996, it might need a new engine soon for all we know! but a £12k+ car could suffer the same fate...

My Indy, who are salt of the earth and not expensive, deal with lots of Poverty Pork purchases, and say it's not unusual for new owners to have to drop big money on repairs at the first service, and not always on engine rebuilds etc. But of course there are new owners who get away with nothing more than a service. Go in with eyes wide open but have a slush for fund ready for the Wallet Bomb. It's handy if you know what to look for, but as everyone says, there is always a reason why it's cheap.

Four new Hankook Ventus tyres added yesterday, plus wheel alignment for £350. Not bad.

Service is going have to be done in stages over the next few weekends as I'm a bit pushed for time - air & pollen filter today as they are easy & hopefully mess free. Bought some 303 fabric proofer which is curing in the sun as I type (this might be the last time I see it until April!).

1100 miles up now over the course of the first month, no issues touch wood so far.

Is this thread still alive?

I've pretty much talked myself into this now at some point, I bought the magazine with the £5k article a while back, I've done stacks of reading on here, Rennlist, 986forum, all Cmooses posts and articles etc.

Anyway, a question.

How do the tyres wear? Evenly, front first, rears first?

Of course, you can't rotate them on a Boxster, which is what I usually do. 4x new, and rotate to even the wear, then you have 4 matching brand/type at all times.

I generally stick new tyres on everything, however on a c£4/5k Boxster thats going to be a decent chunk of cash up front, so I need to know for budgeting sake when viewing potential cars.

Based on experience, I might even swap out the more common 17s to 16's for feel.

Front tyres will obviously last a lot longer than the rears.
