I've pretty much talked myself into this now at some point, I bought the magazine with the £5k article a while back, I've done stacks of reading on here, Rennlist, 986forum, all Cmooses posts and articles etc.
Anyway, a question.
How do the tyres wear? Evenly, front first, rears first?
Of course, you can't rotate them on a Boxster, which is what I usually do. 4x new, and rotate to even the wear, then you have 4 matching brand/type at all times.
I generally stick new tyres on everything, however on a c£4/5k Boxster thats going to be a decent chunk of cash up front, so I need to know for budgeting sake when viewing potential cars.
Based on experience, I might even swap out the more common 17s to 16's for feel.
Mine had two ridiculous budget tyres put on by the seller to get through an MOT - which I've just replaced. Wish they'd put decent ones on & we'd split the difference, as they've went straight in the bin. Because they were front & rear I had to junk the decent Conti on the back & Falken on the front too.I've pretty much talked myself into this now at some point, I bought the magazine with the £5k article a while back, I've done stacks of reading on here, Rennlist, 986forum, all Cmooses posts and articles etc.

Four Hankooks & a wheel alignment set me back £350, so budget at least that for decent tyres.

Front tyres will obviously last a lot longer than the rears.I've pretty much talked myself into this now at some point, I bought the magazine with the £5k article a while back, I've done stacks of reading on here, Rennlist, 986forum, all Cmooses posts and articles etc.

Right, had my first go in a Boxster yesterday. Dropped into Strasse as its local to ask about potential inspection and just sound them out, had a good chat with the bloke there who was very helpful and sent me out for a little spin in this one, no questions asked:
http://www.strasse.co.uk/cars.asp?car_id=254&p...
It was very useful! A few thoughts and questions for the experts?
- It felt massive - in every direction - hopefully it would 'shrink' on the open road? Bear in my mind my most recent frame of reference is a turbo MX-5.
- Pedals felt awful, E-throttle had no feel and a funny response
- Drivers seat was very high - should it adjust up and down? The backrest moved, but I think there was a height adjuster that was not working? My knees were touching the bottom of the steering column, which had a weird folder holder thing under it - is that normal? And steering wheel in your lap?
- It had the Genuine PSE - OMG the sound, the sound!
- The interior was gopping, awful. I can't believe they used stick on plastic wood, it was peeling off, gross. Bits were missing, seat leather cracked, one door handle broken off.
- One owner car, all specced up with chintzy bits, extended leather and sports seats - not really my thing. The more basic the better for me. Other than the exhaust!
- The boots are massive, bigger than I thought. This could easily be my only car.
- It felt very long geared, and slow to respond - I only drove round town though.
- It was 'awaiting prep' which is the best time to look at cars - but the paint work was fked, wheels fked, etc etc. Lookedl ike bubbling paint under one side vent - surprised as I was under the impression that corrosion is not a worry on these (which would be a first for me!) Felt and looked very very 2nd hand.
Overall, I expected it to be a much more serious piece of kit, but I was surprised just how big, heavy, solid, and if i'm honest a little numb it felt?
However... It feels like a stunning amount of car the money still, incredible really. I absolutely loved the noise, the overall ambience etc. Mid-engined thing reminded me of my MR2, feels like a supercar. its telling that depsite all the negatives above, I still felt a little 'wow, this is a Porsche!' . Maybe that means a good one might blow me away.
I'm hoping that it was perhaps a slightly dud one, and not really representative of what to expect in terms of condition -maybe if I try a 2.5 with cable throttle, and a bit nicer presented (enthusiast owned private sale!?), and get a drive on some better roads it might float my boat a bit more?

It is bigger & heavier than an MX5 but does shrink around you. The only time the weight is a problem is on track.
- Pedals felt awful, E-throttle had no feel and a funny response
Endemic with all newer cars unfortunately.
- Drivers seat was very high - should it adjust up and down? The backrest moved, but I think there was a height adjuster that was not working? My knees were touching the bottom of the steering column, which had a weird folder holder thing under it - is that normal? And steering wheel in your lap?
Seat height & steering wheel adjust, wheel just up down, sounds like it was set for a dwarf!
- It had the Genuine PSE - OMG the sound, the sound!
This is missing on mine & it is much too quiet.
- The interior was gopping, awful. I can't believe they used stick on plastic wood, it was peeling off, gross. Bits were missing, seat leather cracked, one door handle broken off.
Wood is rare in any Pork, even rarer in a Boxster as it was expensive. Agree it shouldn't be there. The seats respond well to reconnolising. Mine is 110% better since it has been renovated. Generally it survives well, sounds like this had a hard life.
- One owner car, all specced up with chintzy bits, extended leather and sports seats - not really my thing. The more basic the better for me. Other than the exhaust! Mine is extended leather & sports seats, looks much nicer, not sure what you mean by not my thing. In 2000 mine cost £52K I'd expect leather.
- The boots are massive, bigger than I thought. This could easily be my only car.
Yup space isn't too much of an issue, fitted luggage makes more use of it. Rear boot gets bloody hot though.
- It felt very long geared, and slow to respond - I only drove round town though.
Mine is a Tip so I don't know but remember it was built as an autobahn cruiser.
- It was 'awaiting prep' which is the best time to look at cars - but the paint work was fked, wheels fked, etc etc. Lookedl ike bubbling paint under one side vent - surprised as I was under the impression that corrosion is not a worry on these (which would be a first for me!) Rust is rare although stone chipped arches etc. will rust. Sounds like it has had a veating.
Overall, I expected it to be a much more serious piece of kit, but I was surprised just how big, heavy, solid, and if i'm honest a little numb it felt?
Compared to my wife's Mk1 Eunos yes it is a little numb, but then it is a different car. I can drive 100's of miles in the Boxster & get out with my hearing intact & not feeling battered, I can't in the MX5

Cheers all - yes, I certainly did get the subtle hints of how special a car it was.
Another thing I forgot, gearshift felt really baggy, hopefully a refurb or short shift kit would sort that.
Maybe I need to be buying a really, really cheap one and getting some mods on it from the outset.

Driving it around town you're not going to get the best of it. Third gear @ 2000 rpm gives 30mph in town.http://www.strasse.co.uk/cars.asp?car_id=254&p...

Throw it down some twisties at north of 3000 rpm and it starts to make progress and a decent induction howl as well as exhaust note. The brakes are nice and progressive and don't do that standing the thing on it's nose as you press harder.
If it had base model seats there should be a height adjustment but it isn't motorised like the backrest angle. The steering wheel has height adjustment too. The clip under the dash was the only place you could store your manual and service book in a pre-facelift car without the behind the seats pockets or cubby hole.
The boots swallow my Le Mans camping for two load with ease, apparently two sets of golf clubs can be got into the rear one. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=118...
You don't mention your height but I am 6'0" with 32" inside leg and have the seat on the last but one notch, and only rarely have left knee/hand conflict. Centre console delete is popular with more lanky drivers. If I have the seat all the way back at the seat angle I would like the seat back rubs and squeaks.

You could look at some of the mods the racers in the BRSCC Porsche Boxster series do to get their cars to handle sharper. There is a "Production" and full fat racing class.Another thing I forgot, gearshift felt really baggy, hopefully a refurb or short shift kit would sort that.

I drive a MX5 too, and yes the Boxster did feel a bit big in comparison. But it really isn’t compared to a lot of other cars out on the roads. The MX5 is just tiny
- Pedals felt awful, E-throttle had no feel and a funny response
Pedals and controls have a long throw on them (especially compared to the MX5). I’d say the clutch was slightly easier/lighter in the Boxster. The throttle takes some getting used to, but it’s not difficult.
- Drivers seat was very high - should it adjust up and down? The backrest moved, but I think there was a height adjuster that was not working? My knees were touching the bottom of the steering column, which had a weird folder holder thing under it - is that normal? And steering wheel in your lap?
There’s lots of adjustment to be made with the seats, it may be that as you say the height adjuster wasn’t working.
- It had the Genuine PSE - OMG the sound, the sound!
The noise can be a selling point, you should hear one with a silencer bypass!
- The interior was gopping, awful. I can't believe they used stick on plastic wood, it was peeling off, gross. Bits were missing, seat leather cracked, one door handle broken off.
I have to say I’m not a fan of that interior, personally. Although that is the first time I’ve seen a 986 with the wood interior.
- The boots are massive, bigger than I thought. This could easily be my only car
The practicality of these cars is very surprising. Dad and I have done a number of trips away and only really needed to use one of the boots for our luggage.
- It felt very long geared, and slow to respond - I only drove round town though.
Get it out onto the open road where it belongs and it’ll start to make sense. Round town it’s a doddle. 3rd gear does pretty much everything
I’ll probably get my post deleted for this, but my Dad’s Boxster S is for sale currently in the PH Classifieds (I'd be breaking the rules linking it here). I can PM you some more information if you want. It’s a lovely, genuine car similarly priced to the green one.
Cheers
Philip

I don't suppose anyone knows this car, do they? http://www.prestigecarskent.co.uk/used-car-porsche...

I went for a first look at a 2005 2.7 Boxster locally on Saturday.
After 2 min's sitting in the drivers seat I knew it wasn't for me. My 6'4" frame didn't fit. Seat doesn't go back far enough, seat base doesn't adjust to support legs and my knee's up around the steering wheel.
Shame really as it was nicely in my budget. Ah well, have to see if the budget can stretch to a nice 996 ragtop.(although that take's me far out of Poverty Pork money ..... )
