Didnt think people take 10+ year old cars to porsche but guess there are a few........ Never rated porsche servicing, if i am getting free coffee, a super soft seat, and some bimbo flattering my male ego i just guess i am paying for it somewhere......

Went to have a look at that one as its local to me. Tyres and brakes seemed in good condition. Interior less so... there is probably a water leak somewhere as there was a considerable amount of mould developing inside (dash and roof)!!

Didn't check the SH or the bodywork as it was wet. From the looks of things it must have been there for a while now. I'd like to think that they would sort out the leak before sale, but for anyone interested in it should keep an eye out.

Still... main takeaway for me is that it reminded me that, at 6ft5, I don't quite fit in the 986s...

Decent servicing, better than some of the local indies, TIPEC discount meant it was cheaper as well. Decent loan car, typically a new Cayman or Panamera frequently for a few days.

Surprised to hear that little review, I thought they were quite good there. Wouldn't expect a mouldy car from a dealer at that money

Having been there a few times to look at their cars (often when having my own one being seen to) the ones I have seen often seem to be not so well prepped interior wise. On the other hand, I believe that in terms of the "oily bits" they're usually on top of things, which is why Portiacraft have a good rep and reasonable prices. I understand that when buying from them you can expect a solid car which you may need to clean/detail yourself. Then again, I haven't bought anything from them so I stand to be corrected.

In this particular instance Harry recognied the state of the interior (without me saying anything) and noted that "it needs valeting still".

Not puzzling at all if you came from the front engined pork. All these cars were too successful for their own good, Porsche sold more than enough 944 and 986 cars to match supply demand when new and the cars last well enough to satisfy demand when a decade to two old. Boxsters are good race cars, they can be a bit price to buy race prepared in my view but probably cheap ish to run as parts availability is good.

On a slightly different but related point, I have just discovered that the USA has a "Spec 996" race series as well as the well known "Spec Boxster" series.

I have no idea whether that particular car is road legal or not, but in general you wouldn't want to drive a race car on the road - too harsh and uncomfortable, and often useful things like a heater or fan have been deleted. Also if you drive to the race track and do have a mechanical problem or accident, how do you get back?

It's possible with some cars, just not recommended.

Yeah I know. The commitment to buy a track based toy isn't too scary but the whole trailer thing feels like a whole new and much MUCH more different level to me.

Depends on whether you are talking about a track day car or a Racecar and whether you also need it to be a daily driver, or just drive to and from a track, say, once per month.

To be honest, I think a cheapish estate as a daily driver with a trailer is less hassle and cheaper in he long run as long as you have somewhere to keep it, even if that is only your drive.

cmoose, you're unfairly targeting those of us on the fence re. 986 ownership. Chuffing tempting. I've been thinking that he 986 is already cool, even if the market (and some idiots) may not agree.

One my only remaining questions is, although I much prefer pre-'lift cars (on 17s please), is it worth considering the later ones as well? I mean I think the early cars look better overall, inside and out, but is the driving experience so different? I can't imagine it is but small changes can mean big variations in feel / enjoyment. Brakes / throttle action / response? Gear change? Ride / handling balance? :-)

I've had both 2000 and 2004 S and assuming everything is in equ condition and fresh there is no difference. The suspension is the same the brakes are the same the fear change is the same. The engine is pretty much the same. The main dash shape is the same.
