The ride on the 18's feels sweeter and more comfy.
993 - Interesting. I'd have thought that has a lot to do with tyre choice but I'm no expert in these things. I think the 18s can look nice but to my eye the 17 look "right" and probably save a a small amount of unsprung weight / cost versus 18s overall. Probably marginal but my instinct remains the same (I've only ever driven a handful of 986s, all on 17s).

If they made a 986 Cayman I would already have one, frankly! Will juts have to learn to live with soft-top otherwise, as I don't fancy the 987 quite as much at twice the price right now (better car though that may be). Gotta work out some sums and logistics, including being lazy about shopping for cars
And having an indecisive hankering for some quasi obtainable alternatives...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, nothing, nothing, nothing beats a Boxster on a nice sunny day with the roof down! I just don't get why you'd want to put a full hardtop on it. It adds so much to the driving pleasure and fun, and the car looks beautiful roof down. It's a very draught-free setup with the roof down, and the soft-top is so good when up it's fine in winter anyway.
The 986 was designed as a roadster, it's not some scuttle-shake chop shop compromise! You'd never put a hardtop on a Caterham 7, and I don't know why you'd want one on a Boxster. The biggest thing that stops me looking at a 996 coupe is because I'm 99.999% convinced that even with more dials and more power, I just wouldn't enjoy driving it as much. One day I'd pull up at the lights next to a 986 with the roof down and go "bugger".
Each to their own of course, perhaps I'm just some old romanticist/masochist or something...

The Zeintech is cool but as said a proper coupe chassis would be the ideal. I can see the appeal of verts and could enjoy one as part of a collection, just struggling to adapt to the idea of one as an only car. Mainly because I'm not sure I'd use it that much. But definitely see the appeal and the 986 remains one of the view I'd go for and most bargainous sports car of the modern era in my view.
I need to stop making excuses and just buy one!

I don't own one but have been in a few and honestly 90% of the attraction that sticks in the back of my mind is the sound. They sound fantastic as standard and properly awesome with something a bit freer. The soundtrack is only better with the top down and the Cayman also has a rep for booming sound issues off the rear area probably caused by reflections between the engine cover and rear hatch. Food for thought.

Boxster sounds good, maybe even better, with the roof up (and even aircon on..). Having the roof down makes you much more connected with the outside world, nice even just pootling about..

It's a "different" noise roof up or down. Roof up is more mechanical, more whiney, with more induction roar, especially if de-snorked.
Roof down gives you more exhaust noise, more echo off walls/tunnels etc, and just more of the outside world and what is going on around you.
