Whereas, (put somewhat crudely I admit!) the 986 sharing pretty much everything in front of the rear wheels with the 996 (at least in the case of the 986 S)
ISTR 996 and 986S gearbox is identical just oriented differently with the differential flipped over. 80% part sharing or something like that was the figure bandied around in the past between the two vehicles.

yes

I understand the 986 S had a 911 gearbox - it actually felt different as well, even to my uncultured prodding. Although in fairness, this particular component is not generally found in front of the rear wheels in either 911 or the Box biggrin

Ironically however, it was the 5-speeder found in the council-spec cars what waz the sweeter device to use.

As in they sold so many and thought to themselves we should have charged more. No other car manufacturer charges less for the soft top version. A car is only worth what people are willing to pay for it.

I think their error with the Boxster being too cheap was obvious when they launched the fixed roof coupe version for more money than the soft top.
My 986S was 43K base & the guy added 9K+ of options so he wrote a cheque for 52K in 2000.

Yes but a cayman is an extra 5000 and is not a soft top.

Long time lurker persistently wondering about a budget Boxster.

Question for owners - is the gear change always so slack and baggy? Guess I've been spoilt with previous cars maybe.

Colleague at work brought in a 98 Silver/Black he's just picked up dirt cheap, trying to sell me it! Bit rough but still a stunning car for the money.

No but overtime the cables at gearbox end can get cruddy and the nylon in the cable ball joint ends can wear. The main bushes are nylon too. Some cheapish simple mods can tighten things up nicely.

I joined this club back in June last year:

2.7 99.5k miles Full History with Porsche and south wales specialist, 4 x Conti N Spec tyres, Hardtop, Bose, Leather, Climate (not cold), £5k private sale. The paintwork and leather are really impressive for any age and mileage never mind 100k, the front bumper has seen a high quality repaint, clutch and rear main seal done and recent plugs and coil packs and replacement roof. It feels very far from Poverty Pork especially when the motor is chasing 7000 rpm :-D
6k miles in so far, and I've changed oil, replaced the indicator and wiper stalks (went floppy), repaired 2 keys, repaired the wind deflector clips, had the tyres rebalanced - about £250 so far.
Still to do: rear discs and pads, condensers for the aircon, and I'm sure I can hear the rear suspension arms beginning to creak. A couple of rear tyres are not too far away either.
I'm still to decide how much of that is diy versus somewhere like Cotswold Porshce or one of the indies in Bristol... I'll get some quotes.

Re the gearboxes, my 5 speed feels really good - light and relatively positive.

I wish! frown

Good hunting - finally starting my search proper now the slowlo is paid off. Trying to avoid crippling (potentially actual loan-shark induced paraplegia) debt by sticking to box rather than an Exige S. It's a hard life biggrin

So I'm still looking and constantly scanning the classifieds.

Erm, wow. Those cannot be the origin colour can they!? It might have pulled it off if it was speed yellow not pastel yellow.

The 986 is still a great car. I guess the reviews of the time were glowing as the competition/market was perhaps not as tough as it turned out later. People rave about 911 iterations. I got to drive a friend's very well sorted 964 Targa. Those cost way more than any 986 but for me doesn't deliver any more/better/exciting a driving experience. People moan about spending money on a 986, and you eventually will have to as the cars are not spring chickens these days, but people don't moan about top end rebuilds on 911s or suspension refreshes etc.

For fast road driving whether you drive a 986 as a standard car or whether you want to up the ante and add some modifications it's still a great car to start with. Sure, if you are moving into the realms of track day regular more than road driving then you would probably start with something else. But by, now we're well outside the window of what the 986 was envisaged for. I would think for most enthusiastic drivers a track day or two once in a lifetime is as good as it gets! I'm over 4 years in and on my 2nd 986 now and still think it's a great car. My other car has 50% more power again and is certainly way faster in a straight line and does make me think I want more power in my 986 but overall it strikes a really good balance. The naysayers often complain that the 986 is under-powered or too slow but it's not much different to 964/993 and people don't seem to afflict them with the same complaints. At the same time people rave about the MX5 yet a 986 has way more power than those and also more than the more contemporary Z3/4s too.
