You either buy:
- A full MO30 kit - which includes dampers made by Bilstein to Porsche spec/rates. The full kit also includes the matched springs and ARB's of course.
- Or you go it alone and buy 'aftermarket' Bilsteins which are labelled as B4 (standard), B6 (sport, mild upgrade, probably nearest to MO30), B8 (sport, adjustable etc),
and then team up with springs and other components of your choice.
Or swap Bilstein for Koni, Gaz, etc etc...
Point being - MO30 used to be a bargain at well under a £1000 and a safe bet of getting a well matched setup.
At current prices, not so much now.
I would go Koni & H&R springs.
Ok thanks. I recently had a Bilstein kit fitted to my Big BMW. I think its a B12 which [again I think] is B8 dampers and Eibach springs. Its probably a bit too firm if I am honest for a daily grinder but its not awful. It used to be a bit saggy and now it definitely is not.- A full MO30 kit - which includes dampers made by Bilstein to Porsche spec/rates. When I had my 986 I always thought it rode very well. But it was almost brand new at the time. I'm still hankering after one. My heart says do it and my head says I already have 3 cars so its probably not really that good an idea.
I've lived with a few iterations of suspension all with new bushes and arms. 55k standard 986S, 105k M030 and brand new M030 (Tip on a manual). The fresh M030 is a well judged "fast road" set up. My next step is probably -10mm H&R springs paired with Koni FSD dampers. Koni don't recommend lowering springs for these. I think this will give similar handling to the M030 but with a better quality damping across a broader range of road surface.
The -10 H&R's are a bit of a bargain at a little over 100 quid for a set of four.
I bought some last week, but not sure if I want to fit them or not.
Love the look on -30 H&R's, but the ride has always been on the firm/crashy side, even more so now the shocks are on their way out.
Expect replacing the shocks will sort that, but tempted to put the -10 springs on as well.

Doesn't exactly belong on the poverty thread at almost £10k when 986 S models start at £4.5-5k on Autotrader though does it?I think £10k remains poverty in pork terms, even if it's not an insignificant sum for mortals. Think about what £10k gets you - many different things but not really anything comparable if you want a proper two-seat sportscar with nice chassis / engine / controls that's habitable rather than hair-shirt and dirty overalls. We might soon see the end of sub-£5k Boxsters as the more tired examples bow out of the market.
I'd like to find a good one for under £10k certainly but for the right one ten bags is still a relative bargain assuming it's in good order and not about to land you with a four figure bill.
It's all relative. Arguable that "poverty" in this context likely means £whatever-you-dare up to as much as £10k easily. Many of these were £40k cars new so its not that bad!

In fairness 10k is at the top end of the normal range for 986 cars these days.
Absolutely. This example is as new as you can get - almost.
It has very low mileage.
It is being sold by a dealer.
It sounds good with:
Full leather extended on doors and dash and also new Michelin tyres.
It's all relative. Try this one...

Would work out to be north of £15k imported into the UK with VAT paid at the current exchange rate.
P.S. plus a couple of hundred for some new ambers...
