I've just bought some poverty Pork…
Discussion
Had my £4k 2002 2.7 for 6 months now. Loving it.
Back when we were kids a friend of a friends dad had a Black Porsche from new. My mate always joked that one day he would buy it.
Well my friends dad kept this joke running for years, and now seemingly by accident, has ended up buying it.
Face-lift 2.7, black, 1 owner (friend of friends dad) , garaged its whole life, sports seats, hardtop, bose. 5 grand. It's not far off split mint, just needs a good polish. I am rather jealous, it's a lot nicer than mine.
Original receipt for 39 grand. Guys - if your thinking about one of these, just do it. It is criminal. So much car for the money.

Worth a punt, if you can get it for something starting with a 4...

The dark blue leather wouldnt appeal to me personally, but if it could be got for under £5K, chances are you could get £500 odd for the hard top?http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C797876
Would make it quite a cheap car

Bloody hell that's nice. At some point I want to move my 986 along and go for a 996 cab as I now seem to have an occupant for the back seats. That would be bloody perfect. I know the cab is not as popular but I don't care. I'd get infinitely more pleasure from roof down motoring that I would from a slightly stiffer shell. I hardly ever, ever drive the 986 roof up...Just over 10k, manual, black, cabrio. 90k on the clock

So I've been watching this thread for years, and it has been a terrible, terrible influence. All that beautiful Pov Pork has been a dream for me since my early teens. Last month, whilst deciding what sensible commuter car I should replace my X Type with, I ended up with a 2001 2.7.
Now, I am totally and utterly in love with it. It was very much the cheaper end of the spectrum at just under £4K, and has quite a lot of miles (125k) but it seemed to be in better nick than others I had seen, so I went for it.
Today on the way home from work, the check engine light came on. I, naturally, am now terrified. I've checked under the car and there is a little oil.
Has it gone bang? It sounds fine. But please, dear lord, reassure me with any number of other things it could be... Rather than the obvious.
I've booked it in for a service and inspection at a specialist next week- it was the earliest they could do- but am I going to have to get the bus to work for the rest of this week?
Please, Pistonheads- you (inadvertently) convinced me to buy the thing, can you reassure me I haven't basically set fire to my house deposit...

Where are you? I have a PIWIS so can scan all codes.
I just picked up a 'poverty' 911 tonight. August 98 so as early as can be, 68k and honest with it, quiet and smooth. Suspension is a bit creaky (coffin arms for sure) and wheels a little corroded so secured a £1000 discount (to 11k). Pleased as punch!
So that'll mean my 71k Box (2.7, Artic silver, lots of nice work done on it - by me - will be for sale in the next couple of weeks). The Box was an absolutely amazing car, and my first Porsche but when I had a go in a 996, I had to have one. It's lovely!

If it's otherwise running fine and you have a yellow CEL then it's likely something minor like a lambda sensor. A cheap simple eBay code reader will help and give you the confidence to just keep on driving. If it's one of the tear lambdas in particular then you can carry on.
^What he said. I did the same as you first time it happened, was worried sick. If it still drives and sounds fine it's almost certainly an O2 sensor, and they all do that. A cheap OBD2 reader (sub £20 off eBay) will tell you but also allow you to put the light out. Mine comes on every 6 months or so, it's a case of "they all do that sir".
If it was something bad like an IMS FUBAR you get no lights and no real warning...it just goes and that's that.

Contributing to others, most probably CATS or o2 sensors. You can check older receipts and see if the previous owners did any maintenance to exhaust system, if not, over 10 years they usually need replacing. - Also assuming that you have found oil under the car, not on the driveway? a bit of oil leak is not so bad as long as you monitor the levels... P1128 & P1130 codes can be triggered by an AOS that is on its way out. To check the AOS, try to undo the oil filler cap with the engine running, if you feel a strong vacuum, the AOS is likely to be on its way out and you don't have to wait for the latter symptoms (clouds of white smoke on startup) before replacing it.
Thank you for your advice everyone, I'm very grateful. Happy to report the car has still not exploded in a ball of fire and money. Looking forward to seeing what secrets the service and inspection will reveal next week...
And still ultimately very glad I made the purchase- very much a heart over head decision, and I don't miss my old MX5 one bit, which means it must be love for the long haul! My only issue is that when the inevitable itchy feet come along next year I can't think of anything for the money (or even double the money) that I would want to replace it. Maybe a nice 3.2 Anniversary... Or maybe a 987... One day!
