What do people think of this?

I've been for a look. It's a bit tatty which doesn't bother me. Current owner bought the car with a cracked head and rebuilt it himself. Previous owner had car suspension changed. It's all in description.

Looks a good proposition with a lot of wear components replaced.

The big question - can one of these engines be rebuilt by a guy at home without any specific experience, in his spare time etc.

Depends what you mean by specific experience but there are at least 2 DIY cars on boxa.net which are now 3.4 starting from a 2.5 and 3.2.

with those miles and age, it's a bit too much imho. If it was c4 maybe, but 113k+ 98 c2 with 13k price tag a bit high I think. There are are still 18-19k 997.1's around less than 100k miles. (Although just saw an unlucky gen1 owner on 911 forum, the engine blew after 60 mins of the purchase yikes)

For the inter-mix issue, you need to get a pressure test and than drive at least 50miles (both motorway and city) to see if its sorted, otherwise it's pretty hard to investigate. (Especially if the system already flushed)

If as described then it should be good value. As it is advertised with a best offer option then of course a buyer will be looking to save a grand or so below the listed amount too. The choice of parts is sensible but you will certainly want to ask who did the work (if it was one of the better regarded independent specialists then it ought to be something worth buying, but if it were a DIY or unknown engine builder then it wouldn't be as reassuring). Lots of attractive boxes ticked by that though - almost seems to good to be true...

If it is as described.

And if it is then the marmite interior colour would appear the only significant potential negative.

Blimey..Even those dudes with expensive tools can't put it together in Stuttgart style, it's gotta be some Iron-Man owner out there to do the rebuild himself! scratchchin

If it helps with confidence or credibility go speak to a couple do guys who DIY their engine rebuilds. whether you trust DIY over a 'workshop' is up to you but is a basic budget shop rebuild any better than a materials no expense and time no expense home rebuild? It's too easy to pigeon hole stuff and end up with answers like only ever buy a rebuilt engine from Hartech.

Not at all, I even personally service at my indy than OPC for the last two years. It's just the engine job is very specific and requires surgical detail at some cases, going back to unlucky 911 buyer who just purchased a car with engine rebuilt (at a reputable workshop) and it blew in an hour. My friend rebuilt his 964 engine at States, after 5k so far so good hehe (Well, he experimented and tested with a VW aircooled engine first to get the basics)

I felt like the guy was honest. He claimed to have lots of pics but I didn't dig into that. He did the driving and the car ran fine. I didn't see any smoke or see any oil on his drive. If I decide it is worth a punt then stage 2 is get insurance organised and go there again with the intention of buying if the drive feels right. It's almost cheap enough to ignore the engine and accept that if everything else works and I want a kw suspension / early 3.4 the price is about right.

I went to see the car. The seller told me that He rebuilt the engine himself at home. He is not a professional mechanic. He does something else for a living. He bought the car needing the engine repair. It had a cracked head.

EVERYTHING else - other than my comment/s about head and rebuild - are in the ad.

Agreed. Although perhaps that this engine was actually finished tell us it was not him.

Aside from having spoken to the owner himself you could if you were really bothered ask what forums he is on. Get the username and search the old posts. You may be able to get a feel for the type of owner through that method too and get a feel for whether they cut corners, went above and beyond, knew in principle what they were doing or just learning via youtube etc. The way the advert is written and the details covered shows to me it's an experienced owner who is familiar with the cars and foibles. It seems to be written in such a way to appeal to a more enthusiast owner.

Exactly. The level of detail is above and beyond. I was clearly ill equipped to ask any taxing questions.

Hope you enjoy the car than. thumbup

PS: I'm not sure if he converted the engine into "closed-deck" after the rebuild? That's something I would really ask or consider for a rebuilt 996 engine with that age but again this is probably for keeper miles. Some reputable rebuilders out there also prefer to keep the "open-deck" design as original.

I've had "classic" policies on stuff that's ten year old, the main caveat was having another car to use. Not got my box on one currently as they would cover commuting but not business use.

Dunno

I called them up with 2 cars to insure. My v8 e46 and the new to me 911. Guy immediately said we can't insure the bmw as it is not a classic.
