Well, I suppose £14k is some people's idea of poverty...

Strong for a leggy 2.9 imo. Spec looks ok but I wouldn't.

Price wise I think it's OK, maybe should be mid 13's though. 2006 cars with similar miles are at £10kish so £3k for a 3 year newer car seems a decent compromise.
If that were an S I'd be very tempted indeed but it'd probably be another 4k on top.

Right poverty porkers, this is a bloody long thread and I'm going to struggle to wade through it all!

I'm looking for a 986 Boxster. In any fun car I place handling feel and balance above all else and may well take it on the occasional track day.

I've had a fun car for a while now: a modified mk1 MX5 and currently a caterham. Appreciate that handling / performance is unparalleled at the caterham price, but finding that it's just too much of a compromise as I now like touring / going for a Sunday drive to a county pub more than just a few track days each year As such it sits there on a trickle charger too often to justify.

So, budget of about £8k of less.
2.7 or 3.2S, I don't think I'm fussed.
I want to just find a great example that's been well maintained and won't become a financial drain / garage ornament always asking for a fair share of my next pay cheque.

What I'd like is a decent buying guide so I know what to look at and ask, common issues to be aware of and some insight into the 2.7 v 3.2. Reliability is important to me, probably more than outright grunt. And a 'nice' sweet engine is always more fun than a grunty yet soulless unit (I'll leave that sort of engine for the Mercedes CDi daily driver).
High mileage I'm not too scared of so long as I know what likes to where out.
Age wise, the younger the better, but it's a balance. Seeing some decent 2002/3/4 stuff in my price range.
Ideally would like to buy private from a fellow enthusiast.
Live in Kent so Project Nine Engineering not too far away.

Inspire and educate me, friends!! hehe

Have a look on boxa.net for some potential enthusiast owned cars. If MX5 and Caterham are your background then get a 986 which has got some recent over spend on the suspension or buy a baggy one and do it yourself.

wavey Ex multiple MX-5 owner, including a turbo, and have not owned but have driven a number of 7 types and strongly considered them. Bought a 2002 2.7 Boxster almost a year ago as a fun/2nd/project/track/feel good car, ther are various posts by me back a few pages on here. Send me a PM if you want a chat!

Also - do it!

Hi all,

What are the thoughts on this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-Boxster-986-/142...

I've got my eye out for boxster with a dual-row ims bearing, what is the consensus on a 2.7 built in very late 1999 having one?

Get the engine number to be sure, but fairly likely.

You need to go and check the car, and see how the engine works and etc.. Get it to operating temperature, that's where most stuff shows up (if any!)

Positive side, on MOT history, there is no oil leak, so no RMS at least? In terms of IMS, I have the early 2000 2.7. I've always thought its dual row but no it had the weakest one. I've upgraded original IMS last year (65k) during clutch change, it was good condition no problem at all.

A late 99 will be a MY 2000. Wharever IMS it has you can get a view on it as and when it needs a clutch which probably won't be too far away unless it's been done.

It's a concern at that price - - clutch change is another, what, 600quid at a specialist?
