From what I gather, there are a lot of similarities between 986 and 987 under the skin. Does that mean that they're as likely to suffer from the same issues; I've not seen as many comments about tiring suspension components, corroded radiators, failed air con rads, failed break pipes etc.
Is that just because of age, or was there a step up in reliability for 'consumables' like that?
I do rather like this:

MOT this morning. Passed, but advisory on rear ball joints (knew it was coming). So I thought screw it, just flexed the plastic and gone all in, ordered
4x Meyle coffin arms
2x Meyle front forks
2x rear TRW forks
Ten litres of Shell 5-40
Both filters...
Keep me busy next week. I'll update on how it feels, currently has 130k mile parts with 1yr old H&R coilovers, u keep getting tempted to go for a sifter setup but I'll see if all new joints and bushes makes it feel better.

Kept in a dry, dark atmosphere at room temp, they should be fine. If you want to avoid rubber degradation, get monoball joints. Elephant racing or the like.I have just chucked a glut of new arms on my 996, but I plan to gradually replace all of the bushes with monoball cartridges whilst the balljoints are still new. And Öhlins

I've found the biggest difference to be dampers. New arms and bushes all round which I've done twice now just tightens things up nicely. Need to hurry up and get my Koni FSDs on now the suns out properly. 4x Meyle coffin arms

Even a mono ball will wear out though right? Also I thought the idea of bushes was to allow some flex. So for racing this is not great bur for roads with bumps and imperfections then a bit of flex can prevent damage to the chassis if unexpected knocks are taken at weird angles. If there is no give in the system then the brunt of the impact has to go somewhere.

You don't want flex in suspension pivots really. Nor 'stiction' as they don't allow the dampers to do their job. Also I thought the idea of bushes was to allow some flex. The sort of 'give' you're talking about is taken by the tyres anyway, the bushes don't have enough meat in them to do anything other than help with NVH - the trade off with balljoints..
It's too easy to get over excited in the upgrade path, especially if you think you've saved money by buying a cheap Porsche in the first place. Unless you are really flinging your car about or a regular track day go-er, the extra harshness vs the benefit at the handling limits is probably not worth it for a lot of the trick part suspension which is very costly. Fortunately I paid a pittance for poly gearbox mounts, about £150 all in for a pair of Fluoro rod end adjustable toe links and maybe £120 for solid adjustable top mounts

Think it depends; I think on a Box/Cayman you have an inherently better package for handling so you can get away with some squidge in the suspension joints, whereas a 911 needs a bit more precision and adjustment to really get the most out of it.That said, yes, you easily can spend far far too much. I think springs and dampers are key, followed by some tactically important bushes. I would argue the compliance bush in the lower arm that connects to the diagonal link is one that needs attention first to really tighten up the car.
Still dicing with poverty pork.
I've been in touching distance of:
- 05 987 poverty spec, 54k miles, 8.4k
- 05 987 leather, 74k, 8k
Now trying to price 05 42k miles, FPSH, leather, xenons, after market nav.
Also having budget creep since I discovered the 3.2s isn't massively more unreliable and doesn't suffer from bore scoring in the same way as the 3.4.

I like Arena Red. I'd have to bin the wood though, wood has no place in a 911.
I can't see the car you're discussing from the link, maybe it has sold. However, if anyone is looking for a nice Arena Red 996 let me know as my boss has just told me he is advertising his soon. It's an Arena Red/grey leather 1998 C2 with reasonable mileage and great service history and he's not asking the earth for it.
Wish he'd advertised it two months ago before I bought mine!
