I've finally entered the world.
2001 986 2.7 Boxster

78k full Porsche service history and a wedge of receipts!

Modern Lights, rear sensors, 6 CD changer if those are ever used anymore!

RMS done with a clutch change at 40k, no mention of IMS Bearing though. It's appeared to had the oil changed every 5k so that'll help!

However...new roof done 18months. Today I went to put the roof down and it just stopped. With the clam partially open. The windows then came back up like it had finished a closing cycle...so it sounds like a micro-switch somewhere?

I removed the fuse and relay..both looked okay, but still no luck. The handbreak was on aswell so it hadn't tipped that switch.

As I needed to drive 70miles I had no other option than to remove the hydraulic cyclinders for the clam and manually lower the roof. So she is now home, with a non-functioning roof!! Any advice would be great, and I also need to refit these cylinder and arms. I'll probs take it to a specialist to overcheck it.

Other than that...lovely stuff - it sounds mega at high RPM!

When launched, I had a v6 probe. A blue with tan poverty spec Boxster pulled up just on the Oxford ring road heading towards the m40 - we were at the lights next to the Cowley works.

Would you believe it. Probe won. It was at that point I realised I could take the abuse for the car had proven itself to be a supercar beater.

Can these roofs function without all the motors and hydraulics. Could you remove all that guff and then just raise it and lower it manually. Does it stay in the down position while driving with all the above removed and / or disconnected?

Good to know! I kept the speed low just to be sure. I didnt really try to move the roof after I got the clam down, as I was pushed to get back home.

Fortunately i live 10mins from Cotswolds Porsche Specialist, and its going down on Friday.

http://www.cotswoldspecialists.co.uk/

Speaking with Lee it could just be the switch, but they will hopefully reconnect the cylinders and arms and give me some good news.

Wish me Luck!!

Another topic - has anybody connected an Aux to the 986 stereo? Ive got the 6CD option, which I might remove, but I guess the port in the back of the head unit can take some sort of Aux adapter.

Yes, did it a few years back - I think you can buy the connector relatively cheaply on ebay - as long as it's the standard unit, not the Bose

From memory it's a square ISO type connector, which you plug in in place of the CD changer.

Mine gone to WBAC today, not so much lower than my initial ask. Put it on ebay and AT a month ago but only two legit viewings, both were Air-cooled owners and looking to buy an affordable daily pork. Non A.C. Was an issue. The rest of the people who contacted me was a bit of joke rolleyes

They are not selling that fast in my experience, I think there are still loads of both 986 & 987 available for good prices.

I was thinking of importing to Spain for parents but that also looked a bit hassle, so nearly 6 years only two broke-down and loads of fun, end of poverty pork ownership.

- One word of advice, stay away from OPC for service, it seems like they became very opportunistic in trying super-high prices on these lately!

Was told by the OPC that many of the 968 part prices have now been increased as its now classed as a 'classic'!
Maybe they won't be so 'affordable' to run for much longer?! rolleyes

Doesnt seem that cheap given the mileage.

This seems better value to me with half the miles

pros:
it's a 987.2 so shouldn't have bore score/ims risks
it has heated seats
it has parking sensors.
it's cheap for an 11 plate S

cons:
you could get a less mileage older 987.1 S for cheaper.
it's white
it's still white.
it's on 101,000 miles, what is the suspension/engine like? i'd want to see a book of receipts.
it has nav so will be the bose fibre optic type stereo so a bugger/expensive to upgrade

It looks to have been for sale for a while; when was it last frosty?

Hasn't been MOT'd since March 2016, when it had done 82,000 miles

hadn't noticed that, good ones don't tend to hang about. when i was looking for our 987.1s i had a watch on autotrader/pistonheads and it was only in that dealer a couple of days.

Is the stereo config different between 987.1 and 987.2? I changed the stereo on my Bose equipped 987.1 and I just had to buy a £180 box that got the new unit on the fibre ring. A bit of a pain, I suppose, but wouldn't phase me too much on a £19k car. The other points would, though!

My mate just sold this for close to asking in a couple of weeks I think:

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Anyone on here that bought it? Cracking car (and not driven very hard for the 40K or so miles they've had it if I'm honest hehe), almost had it off him myself at the end of last year but couldn't justify 3 Porsche sportscars in the household wobble

Well I read this thread a bit and managed to pick up a 2006 car for 9k on eBay, have had it maybe 3 months now and loving every minute. I use it as a daily and although it had almost 100k on the clock it doesn't drive or feel like it. Ok it had a broken spring at the back and I used the laser level like in the previous post or two to work this out but other than that it's pretty much ok. I had it properly checked out and serviced by a local independent so it should be good for the next 20k (£300). I have thrashed it quite a bit including a trip to france and a few laps of the old formula 1 circuit at Dijon. I had to buy a couple of new rear tyres as although they were not worn out it was a bit slippy at the back because they were old (not much recent mileage until now). Loving every minute and can't recommend one enough. In fact if I had not been on a Porsche tour last year with a mate and had a look around the factory in Stuttgart, probably wouldn't even have thought about buying one. I did look at them a few years ago and bought an M3 instead, now wishing I had test driven the Boxster sat next to it as well as is a much more involving drive and IMHO a damn site more comfortable with very useful luggage space if you don't need child seats in the back !
