cmoose said: That looks seriously scrummy, Tatty, you lucky boy. Logo on the wind break is trying too hard for my palette and the coded air intake slats would go, but still overwhelmingly lovely.
These cars are just looking better and better! cheers car is as bought, only had it 2 weeks today and sad to say only driven it twice too its into porsche bournemouth saturday for a free health check so hopefully no problems, i know brakes are pitted (mot advisory) so going to see exactly what that means

mohitos said: Such RIDICULOUS value! Yep can't believe how much car it is for the money. 82k miles FSH & new roof with glass screen. Just had it serviced by local Porsche specialist & other than replacing a drop link the only thing it needs are new air con rads which can wait as only use the car with roof off.

Slightly annoying - you can now get an S for the price 2.5 were going for when I bought to years ago.
Tempted to trade up but only problem is that I'm pretty reluctant to move from mine into an unknown S. One would feel like greed got the better of one if you swapped to an S and it went pop...

I thought you were saying you wanted S levels of go. Must be possible to pick up a known good/rebuilt larger engine and sell your own 2.5 engine on?
I can't remember exactly what engine will fit the 2.5 but if we're talking 5 grand's worth of car then there has to be a point where silly things like 911 engine swaps become something quite feasible.
You're better off just buying an S and taking a chance on the condition of the engine now but if you already have the car, why not play with the engine and have something better than an S?

Congrats, lovely car and fantastic value !! I bought one of these new in 2000 & still have the original sales invoice (even though I sold it back to OPC in 2002). In case anyone is interested, basic price back then was £35,881.70...add options, VAT & OTR charges...you just picked up a 50k car for 10% of it's original value :-)) Enjoy !

I love reading this thread and looking at all the pictures of poverty Pork, I've also noticed the shear amount of early model Boxters running around...they are everywhere and most of them seem to be blue...???, great stuff... Happy driving everyone...

I would like S levels of go. What I don't want is buy an S and regret it. 3.4-litre 996 engines go in easily enough, plenty of 3.4 986s knocking around, especially in the US. But the 996 engines are even flakier. Any rebuilt 996 on the open market is going to cost a fortune. I'm sure if I was in the trade, I could my ear to the ground for 996s with rebuilt engines that have been written off in front end accidents or whatever and pick the engine up for not much. But anyone in the trade will be doing that precisely because they think they can turn it around for a lot more money. I'm a bit scared of the 3.2s, if I'm honest. Without wanting to offend S owners, and this is purely anecdotal, I've been trawling 986 Boxster forums for a couple of years now, and more often than not when someone reports a dead engine, it's an S. They seem to suffer disproportionately from cracked heads and snapped chains, just to add to the IMS fun. What I should probably do is get an early 2.7, upgade the IMS bearing, drop in the lower final drive from the 2.5, take out a little weight and you have what is probably the best all round 986 proposition.

90% of these that I see around nowadays have absolutely horrid condition paintwork(as in not corrected, polished or waxed since new). Its such a shame, because as some of you guys have posted, a decently cleaned up example is still stunning today, and for the money its incredible. Just a random observation, makes me want to get stuck in detailing them

Now we're talking. Roughly what figures would you expect from that without starting to spend much on lightweight parts etc?

Weight, bhp, torque. It sounds like you've researched the idea a little, no?
Obviously you can spend a fortune going lightweight but there are easy things to do which can make a bit of a difference where it matters.
As for the 2.7 engine, what sort of output can you expect from that over a standard 2.5?
It's the type of thing that people do to IB's all the time and produce some interesting machines, now that Boxsters are in the price range they are i can see them becoming the new tinkerer's toy with the way they handle. And you don't have to worry so much about rust.

I see.
You're looking at about 15hp extra with the 2.7 and some more torque. Realistically, you could get about 50kg with a few mods. It wouldn't be cheap. You'd need light weight buckets, light weight back box. Dump the aircon, dump the roof mechanism (if the latter sound scary, it's not, disconnected the mechanism on mine, works very nicely manually). That lot would get you 50kg off.
Then chuck on M030 suspension (good value), geo it as well as the stock bits would allow and put that lower final drive in. Should be a lovely drive.
Realistically, we're talking about £8k all in. £5k for the car, £3k for the rest. Roughly.
