Well I turned up for the car today with a friend who worked at Specialist cars of Malton.

Log book wasnt in the sellers name, so straight away I wasnt happy

It never had:
Bose
Stability
heated seats

Air con wasnt working. It needs both front condensers.
Oil leak on crankshaft oil seal, only slight but would require attention
Needs all four discs and pads.

Also had rear bumper requiring maching polish at best if not paint.

So not as described, Pistonheads beware when its up again. He offered it to me for £4500, and asked me to offer as he was desperate to sell.
I walked.
You not a little bit tempted at <4.5k?

The condensers are a simple job and <150 for aftermarket parts (which are pretty much identical to OEM).

Bose sounds crap anyway so there's not much loss there. Heated seats I'd miss, but not a massive show stopper?

The main issue I'd have is the log book. Did he offer a reasonable explanation?
My Friend offered to do the work cheap. He said £150 a side for condensors plus fitting, add £650 for oil seal, then you should really stick a clutch in while the gearbox is off, discs were all knackered, it soon adds up. Starter motor was sticking too.

The point is if he lied about everything fitted to the car, why would he tell the truth about the log book.
I could of probably got it for £4000, in fact my mate was more tempted than me.

I like the Bose, I had a fully loaded black S 54 plate as a second car last year.
I just wanted a little runabout/ fun car for work.

I wouldn't compare the 986 and 987 Bose systems - they're very different IIRC.

I did my condensors a couple of weeks ago - 130 quid for both and it's an easy job to do yourself and 30quid to get regassed, 150 each is Porsche prices.

The rest, he's probably right about. Mine had clutch, RMS, IMS bearing, new discs/pads, front wishbones at 70k miles.

Cost a fortune for the previous owner which you'll never see back at resale time. I bought it at 73k and it's making a lovely reliable runaround.

Sounds like you should keep at eye on the classifieds and hope something turns up with the work already done. Sounds like you have a list of things to check now smile

Older Boxsters are not worth a lot now so its getting to the stage of paying a bit more and getting a newer lower milage better condition car.
My 54 plate was a 986, I bought it for less than £10k with FPSH and 57000 miles on. It needed front discs, but thats hardly a massive expence. They were cheaper than my e46 M3.

I will keep my eyes open, but may wait till next year and get a 987 instead, or maybe a Cayman. Be better when our little lad is in a front facing car seat, as he is only 6 weeks old.

It's like most older Porsches - there's usually a spread of prices and that's often determined by the amount of work required. Most reckon they can do high miles, if looked after and kept on top of.

The 996's could be a better option for your little one - they're pretty reasonably priced now too (the 911's not children; kids are a money pit) smile

Me too - not sure 20k+ is classed as poverty though smile

There are a few threads running on them at the moment, some with scarey running costs and others raving about them.

I think I'll get one next (or maybe an e90 M3), but it's hard to justify the difference in price over a 6-7k Boxster S without the use some heavy duty man maths smile

I know, and I cant justify it yet anyway.
I think realistically I cant do bad with a decent Boxster S for what I want. I will not be buying on ebay though.

Got mine off eBay after going in with cheeky bid once classified as of £6.5k didn't sell.

Offered £5k if car was as described & they said they wanted at least £6k so I wished them good luck.

They called back 2 days later & said if I paid within a week I could have for £5k.

Car is a 2001 Boxster s with 85k miles & FSH including new roof with glass window.

I've spent circa £1.5k since buying it To get it 100% although some of that is because I'm fussy ( Full service, Drop links, new air con rads, new tyre to replace crap Kumho one & new front discs & pads & a new stereo )

update on mine

took it to opc for free check up

here are the results

We reported

Brake fluid due for a change and over filled
Front shocks excessively corroded tops and bottoms
N/S/R Shock leaking
Rear anti roll bar corroded + bushes worn
Play N/S/F steering rack arm
Engine Oil Leak (rear main)
Oil Leak from Plug Tubes= 6 Coils and tubes

Other Items

Battery non genuine
Washers blocked
A/C not getting cold
Roof not closing correctly, just a broken tie
Power Steering pipe union in O/S/F wheel arch area cracked.
Exhaust clamp nuts/bolts very rusty and 1 bolt missing.

question is
any good independant around southampton i can go to for a price check as the opc provided prices for all the above jobs which came to approx 3k +vat, now thats nearly 3/4 what i paid for the car

main jobs are leak and coil tubes first, then shocks, etc

cheers
steve

I can't help with a recommendation, however you should certainly be able to beat an OPC quote. With the RMS, I'd consider IMS (and if worn, clutch replacement) too while they've got the gearbox out.

The other option is to trailor it somewhere what will do a good but cost effective job. I know it's a very long way but I've not heard a bad word said about Revolution Porsche in Yorkshire.

Mine will be going there for a major service (and I'm in Cambs).

Take all that with a pinch of salt I had the same thing when I took mine to jmg in Bournemouth which surprised me as they had been servicing my 911 for 6 years and they quoted me 3 grand to fix everything . I then took it to autostrasse in Essex who advised I needed some new exhaust clamps due to rust and steering parts ( that have escaped my mind now ) And a power steering pipe and total bill was under 200 quid . He looked at my quote from jmg and said he checked all the things they said and they are fine and was mystified why they had advised me these things needed doing .

It pays to get a second quote and never go to an OPC they rip you off big time.

Well I can see the 1st unplanned expenditure coming up on the Pork. frown
It's started leaving a damp patch on the drive, appears to be water and not oil so I'm taking that as a positive, checked the coolant level and it didn't seem bad but I've popped a bottle in the boot just in case until I can get the engine cover off and have a look.
Worse bit is its appeared while the Mrs (it's her car) is away on holiday in my car so somehow it's going to be my fault. banghead

Radiators? Have you had the front bumper off recently - it's usually pretty obvious when the radiators are on there way out and often accompanied with load of leaves/crap trapped which makes it rot.

Funny you should say that, the pictures of that being done are a couple of pages back. wink
The rads were pretty clogged but the leak is under the engine not the front.
It's dripping from part of the plastic under tray, going to have to either get that off, or the top engine cover and have a look.....
Anyone know which route is going to give better access, top or bottom?
I'm imagining a cracked hose or water pump. frown

That was a bit lazy of me - I remember the photo but thought it was cmoose's for some reason.

Fingers crossed it's a hose..

Found the engine. rotate

But can't really see a thing in there that looks 'wet' confused
....and now of course it's started raining which is not great needing the roof off to get at the oily bits...looks like getting underneath might be the next plan smash

Have you got the latest 94 revision part number expansion cap? If not it might be worth trying that first. After that it might be the expansion tank itself.

Getting to the engine isn't so bad. If you are short like me then actually working around it is more awkward!

Not sure about the expansion cap/tank it looks quite dry around there...
If the weather holds for more than 10 minutes I'm going to get underneath and get the under trays off, should be able to see the source of the leak then. frown

I've had both replaced - the tank itself is harder to spot, but the cap will give you a wet boot.
