That being the case, surely the OPC must accept liability? Doesn't sound too dissimilar to a negligent or defective survey on a house.

...indeed, from a purely legal perspective, such an inspection would reduce the liability on the seller, and increase liability on the buyer. The buyer would be making a fully informed purchase decision, and seller/state-of-vehicle would be completely transparent at the time of sale. Ball in buyer's court.

Looks nice that, not sure if it falls into the "poverty" category though, that's a healthy budget for a 996 wink

That looks like a great car, should be a little wiggle room on that price too.

Went and had a look this evening. Two-owner car (last owner since 2004) with c.78k miles. Has Pioneer double-DIN touch screen stereo/nav, a switchable sports exhaust (sounds great) and KN induction kit. Very clean with new paint on bonnet/bumper and front wings. Just MOT'd, but...

- MOT highlighted an oil leak (passed emissions etc)
- no stamps in the service book since 2008/60k miles although apparently the dealer is having the two missing stamps added by the garage that did the work. Mileage in the past 5 yrs has been c.10k.

Took it for a quick drive and engine/gearbox seem fine, but not having any 911 experience I wouldn't know what to look for in any event.

More thought needed!

If the leak is from the RMS it shouldn't be too much of a worry, most of them do it!
I'd be more concerned about the missing history, stamps in the book don't mean a lot, especially if they're added later!
Mine could do with paint at the front, I'd guess most will have it done at some point so possibly nothing to be concerned about there.

The car is in Mortlake, about 5 mins drive from home and near to Charles Ivey who can do an inspection for me on Monday.

The last stamp in the book is from an indy in 2008, but the same indy apparently saw the car in 2010, '12 and will be seeing it again on Monday when they can add in the missing stamps. My plan is to get the car inspected and see what's said, then make a decision.

The plot thickens...

Apparently the car has not had a service since 2008 (at 60k miles; current mileage is c.77k), but has had new brakes and annual MOTs (which I've seen, along with invoices for any remedial works required).

One to walk away from, I think.

an the experts advise on this one for me, if a car has not had a service in say 6 years but it has only done say 10K miles in those 6 years, what problems would you see that a major service would not address?

My 996 has averaged 2-3k mls pa for the last few years I'm sorry to say, still gets serviced annually.

To clarify, the car has obviously been given an MOT every year and remedial issues have been addressed, including new discs all round and back pads. Car has just been MOT'd with only two comments (short travel on handbrake and an oil leak), but I can't even be sure that it's had an oil change since 2008.

The funny thing is, it's got a pretty new Pioneer double-DIN head unit fitted that must have cost a few quid! Why not service it in all that time?!

Thanks for your feedback Animal - I've had my eye on that one too but just hadn't had a chance to see it. I take it you're not doing the Charles Ivey inspection now? The ad clearly says "a full service record" so what you've found is frustrating. If I did get it, it would be taking a trip to Autofarm or Hartech anyway for work, but am finding it hard to get past the service history irrespective. Looks great in the photos though!

Can't see the point in paying for an inspection now.

Fair-do's tbh. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places but am struggling to find much in the way of tidy 3.6 996 C2's (coupe/manual) at the moment.
