It's all about the maintenance and history. As usual the advert doesn't give any detail, so anybody's guess is almost as good as another.

Provided you have the detail I'd agree it's a personal decision.

My own personal view is that buying a write-off is rarely worth it (whether category D or category C), given the available choice of cars with no write off history.

Unless you plan on keeping it forever (or you don't mind setting fire to your wallet and possibly your head as well) it's entirely likely to be more hassle than it's worth, even with an appropriately discounted purchase price. A fair price is itself impossible to determine without detail on what caused the write-off and what rectification work was done, when and by whom (including due inspections etc.); this alongside the rest of the use / service and maintenance history of any second hand purchase. I'd want evidence of the right work being undertaken on the right schedule (preventative or otherwise) and to the right standards, plus a reputable seller. Those things are hard enough to come by at this end of the market without introducing the uncertainty over insurance history!

Friend of Friend has an early 986 3.2 with the 3 button key. He recently changed the battery in the key to get the buttons working again. Now he has damage to the plastic casing and it's currently taped together. He asked me if I can recommend anywhere to source a replacement casing for poverty money.

Can he buy a new casing or does he just buy a used key and transfer everything over?

From memory you can buy a cheap ebay case. The case itself is ok but the buttons are too plastic and hard to operate the buttons underneath. You really need the more supple OPC button piece. I think that may be available separately. The OPC case is cheap enough anyway. I did this in late 2013/early 2014 hence the hazy memory.

I didn't guess opc might sell the case. I presumed they'd wanna sell you the complete key for 200 quids.

Porsche can be funny sometimes. I broke the throttle pedal on our 968 and expected to be screwed by Porsche for a new one, cost was from memory less than a fiver.

Got an eBay key casing for mine. Yes bit plasticy but I find it OK. Worth a go for cheap. I kept the or not original back half for the porsche badge.

'98 2.5 with glass rear screen, recent clutch, Continentals all round (new rears) and FSH.

My initial reaction was £5250 being fairly strong money, however with only 65k, could be a smart buy. May even be able to haggle it down to something starting with a 4...

Well it's probably in a good place to get it fixed...I thought the workshops in there were brilliant (good photo ops as well)

Anybody changed the transmission mounts on a 986?

My engine mount is absolutely buggered, so thats getting replaced (its superseded with a 987 part now). But the trans mounts are probably equally worn but much more expensive.

As an aside, daydreaming a bit - a little bit in love with this! What a great choice by the first owner, colour, interior, even the wheels are lovely and just that bit different to all the others you see.
