Noticed that prices of 997 Gen 2 GT3s and 997 Gen 1 GT3 RS are now about the same - mid seventies, this begs the question - if you had 75k which would you chose?

Gen1 GT3 RS look more hardcore but virtually the same as the Gen 1 GT3 under the skin
Gen2 has the 3.8 motor which is supposed to be better than the 3.6
Gen 1 GT3 RS values seem to be holding up better.

well I like that Gen 1 GT3 RS and I like the Gen 2 GT3, but which is best?

Guess it depends on your angle of view - you have already summed it up quite nicely yourself...
3.8 GT3 is the faster, and arguably for some "the better" car, whereas the RS is rarer and maybe a tad more special (for some).

Don't think one can help you much with that question as it is one on where the answer very much depends on what you are looking for in your purchase!

The gen 2 is generally accepted as an "improvement" over the gen 1, no question, but are the improvements "massive" - I doubt it and the gen 1s are hardly dogs.

So, the other consideration is.....drum roll please.....depreciation and the general consensus is that the RS variants hold value a good deal better than the cooking GT3s. So, three years down the road you may have lost more on a gen 2 GT3 than the gen 1 RS, BUT, you will have a nicer radio to look at according to most (oh and you will deffo have the all important buckets)? rolleyes

Gen II GT3 can be had with front lift system and dynamic engine mounts .. not available on Gen I RS.

Also, Gen II GT3 has PSM, Gen I RS does not.

Gen II GT3 for me smile

Not that I am in the market.

gen 2 GT3 every time for mid 70's, it's faster, has better Aero, and is more usable.

RS is worth 67k to me not mid 70's so it depends what you are looking at.
a few dealers have sold mint RS<70k, so that's what they are worth.

all the expensive one's have been on Pistonheads for months and months. <70k for these babies these days if you want to sell it.

Responses so far seem to show fairly equal support - perhaps that's why they appear (in the pistonheads classifieds) to be similar money. It seems to be either the looks of the Gen 1 RS or the engine and dynamics of the Gen 2 GT3.

+1 on the above

in my case I wouldn't be able to exploit both to their full potential and hence wouldn't be any faster in one or the other. Bought the RS for the badge and extra "special" i guess

I had a nosey around a Gen 2 Gt3 last week, and must admit I was very tempted to change the Evora for it.. The RS has never really tempted me for some reason

It depends what you want the car for . For a car with regular track use id buy a gen 1 rs throw the suspension in the bin and get a set of JRZ dampers and away you go . It would make a lovely and slightly purer car with more predictable and better handling characteristics . Id go rs with higher miles and slightly cheaper all day long .

Came up as an Orange Gen 1 RS - great value from Porsche, Low miles, nice colour, and 2 year warranry.

I would personally have the Gen2 over the Gen 1, I read/watch that there are many improvements, I think it looks sleeker, and I cant stand the prehistoric PCM in Gen 1 cars!

But as everyone has had - 6 of one, half a dozen of the other....

Maybe drive them both (back to back or close enough) You will know which one you want then

997's - Gen 1 was the best till the Gen 2 came out.

As a complete package, including some track work, the Gen 2 GT3 is damn good value, and driver who invests £10k in track tuition will certainly keep a 7.2 RS (£20k more expensive) driver well within his/her sights.

If the majority of my miles involved track work, the Gen 2 RS is the obvious choice - and it has scope to better retain its value than the 7.1 RS.

It's all about the gap between a 7.1 to the 7.2, and within that the 2 variants & finally the 4.0.

Now what if they had made a 4.0 GT3 ( non RS)? That would be the daddy, for road & track.

I'd go gen 2 unless the RS comes with an OPC warranty. Too many gen 1 RS have required engine rebuilds due to RMS failure for my liking.

For whatever my opinion may be worth, when faced with the same dilemma, I bought a Gen2 Clubsport for £75k in December. It probably won't hold its money quite as well as an older RS, but it was scarcely over a year old, almost 3 years warranty on it, a selection of nice toys (albeit nothing that I would have paid a premium for) and is to me a better step from my previous 996.2 than a 997.1RS. In short, I thought it was a better car and backed up my opinion with my hard earned. If Louder colours, RS bragging rights and potentially stronger mid to long terms residuals are your thing then you still won't be making a bad decision with a gen1 RS regardless. It isn't as if any GT3 is anything less than an exceptional way to travel thumbup

I did not know that!

Is this the same as the 997.1 GT3?

An engine does not need to be rebuilt just because the RMS needs replacing!

Very very few GT3's have had to have engine rebuild.
