Is that the Nick Whale car? If so it was with Castello a year back and is the only advertised replacement engine car I have seen. The fault lies in the casings (casting faults?), but they try to just do the RMS first. Mine had the RMS done recently, but has stopped leaking for now.

Lol - it was only a drop the size of my thumbnail on the garage floor - not like the Torrey Canyon had run aground !

I'd go gen 2 unless the RS comes with an OPC warranty. Too many gen 1 RS have required engine rebuilds due to RMS failure for my liking.
How many do you know of?
Quite a few. Search this forum and you'll find quite a few threads where owners have replaced RMS on their RS but this has still not cured the leak resulting in a full engine rebuild (something to do with internal engine components not being properly balanced/aligned hence the requirement for a rebuild or engine replacement). Sambaman had an RS that had this problem and required a rebuild or anew engine can't remember. There was also a couple that have a road report featured here on PH that also required a rebuild due to same problem. OPC coffed up on each occasion albeit it reluctantly with Sambaman. Happy to find you links if you want but this is fairly well known issue on some gen 1 997 GT3 RS.

Doesn't seem to be same issue with 996 GT3 RS.

Edited to say here is a link but there are quite a few more. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Hi G!
IMHO you will have more of a sense of occasion driving the RS and will love it.
You already have the 997 GT3 so are familiar with the engine and RMS.
The gen 2 GT3 will go faster tho.
Choose your track weapon carefully smile

Caught this vid some time ago...would have been more interesting had it not P1SS3D it down for the entire duration of their test! :-o

Also not quite on topic here as we're trying to compare 997.2 GT3 vs 997.1 RS here - they're all RS's in the vid.

For the record, I went Gen2 clubbie as well.

I think the Gen2's have it! ;-)

I have owned both and prefer the Gen 1

Not my video but I would agree (Although haven't driven a 996 but I think this one is pretty non-standard so I wouldn't move into a 996 on the strength of this)

To even it out a bit I read a lot more about engine issue on gen 2 car than gen 1. Their bigger capacity cause more vibration issues which in turn causes cam bolts to start backing out. Effects RS cars more or GT3s with LWFW.

And don't forget the centre locks

A Gen 1 car or Gen 2 don't need a rebuilding if the RMS fails. One of the issues with the RMS failure in the 2008/2009 is that the OPC in the UK hadn't got a clue how to install it. My local OPC had 4 goes before they got it right and many upgrades in the seal and method of installation from the factory before it was sorted.

There is a lot written on these engines and gear boxes being bullet proof, it's not the case. There are issue with gen 1s / 2s and 4.0 L cars nothing is perfect and they are rare cases in the bigger picture. So I wouldn't base your decision to buy a gen 1 / 2 car on reliability as from my research they are pretty even on failures.

I own a gen1 GT3 which has had a replacement engine (con rod failure) and extensive gear box works. Neither of these problems would stop me from recommending a GT3 of any generation as the smiles per mile out weigh any possible issue which may occur.

I started this thread back in 2012, noting that Gen 1 RS and Gen 2 GT3 were both around 75K. Interesting to see where values have gone since then, particularly the Gen 1 GT3 RS! I was close to moving from my Gen 1 GT3 to a Gen2 RS when they were just over 100K, however, they are now way too much for me.
