Okay, so I picked up the 991 Carrera S this morning and have now had to return to the office for a while so I thought I’d post up some thoughts.

I want to avoid creating a 991 fan boy thread, and I certainly don’t want to provoke another 997 vs 991 debate, but I thought people might be interested in my (and other peoples) initial and ongoing experiences owning and running the car.

Until this morning it had been a few weeks since I had driven a 991 and I hadn’t tried one with the exact spec I have chosen, which is as follows:

Carrara White
Black Leather
20” Carrera Classic wheels
Delete model designation
BOSE
Cruise Control
Floor Mats
Heated seats
Park assist rear
PCM
PDK
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC)
Power steering plus
Porsche Crests on headrests
Wheel centre set
Sports Chrono Plus
Porsche Sports Exhaust
Sports Seats Plus
Telephone Module
Top tint windscreen
Wheel spacers 5mm

After the initial pootling about reaquainting myself with the car I found a section of road on which to play and something dawned on me. This car is not so much better than the 997, it is different. There has been so much talk of whether it is better and if so by how much. But I have begun to take the view that there is no point thinking of this as a 911, it is a 991. It is so different from the car it replaces that I wonder whether trying to make a direct comparison is pointless.

I specced my car to be quite sporty but with a few extras to make it a bit more refined. The Power Steering Plus for example which makes the car easy to drive about town and relaxing on the way to somewhere where the car’s sportiness can be employed to good effect.

So far there is nothing that I wish I had specced apart possibly from power folding mirrors. Not only is it nice that they take themselves out of harms way when the car is parked, when approaching a narrow “chicken run” with a van coming the other way it would be nice to be able to do a wallet saving fold-in. If I’ve missed anything else off the “must have” list I’ll report back in due course.

I’m going to keep this brief but add to it later when I have driven some more, but one thing I would caution any new 991 owners about is: DON’T BREAK ANYTHING! My car has a tiny flaw on one of the gear shift buttons. It is very, very minor but I want it sorted out. There is not a new steering wheel in the UK. Nor is there a spare in Germany. They have got to get one off the assembly line and delivery timescales are unknown. Anyone putting their 991 in a hedge might not be seeing it again for quite some time…

Edited to add some snaps:

Yes, but I deleted model designation because there was too much reading to do on the back.

They look better in the flesh than in pictures. I was concerned for a while that I had done the wrong thing and should have gone for the Carrera S wheel but I'm glad I went this way now.

The grey inside the rim looks good with pale paint. Not so struck on dark cars, so if the car was black I'd go with some silver wheels perhaps.

That's not a million miles away from the spec i have in mind, so will follow your posts with interest. I get your point about comparing the 991 to the 997 and I don't want to push you down the 'which is better' argument (there's too much of that), but what are the stand out features for you when compared to 997?

The preciseness, smoothness, balance, synergy and refinement.

This is what I was trying to say above, some people want their car to be raw, in need of taming and a bit hairy-arsed. They want to make it all work. I prefer the sublime sensation of driving something nearly perfect.

+1 - my Cayman S is white too and I was struck by the similarities, especially at a glance.

Yeah, the front half of the car (when viewed side on) has always looked almost identical but the proportions of the rear half now look very similar too.

That engine will be ahead of the rear axle before you know it wink
