Blimey ......... Why take the 34H ferry .............. the 24hr is bad enough but the 34h???????? Prepare yourself. You do know why they do a 34h ferry.
As you are coming so far, I'd have gone for the 19h from Plymouth to Santandar.
Few reasons pal, means I can do a full Saturday at work then drive down to portsmouth on the Sunday & get the late might ferry, get some kip & then we've got a day at sea, go to bed & wake up in Bilbao with the full day ahead of us.As you are coming so far, I'd have gone for the 19h from Plymouth to Santandar.
Plus it means a club cabin, on the cheap, with swmbo on a boat away from home for 2 nights
Oh, & it can't be any worse than the Friday party boat from Hull for the ring trips can it?!

Looks so much fun, I'm proper jealous I'm only 23, and when I can afford to do this with a half decent car, I'm going to!!
It has to be on the top ten things to do before you die :-)cragswinter said:

Indeedy, maybe I am getting old but I found it quite relaxing as well. The trip was spur of the moment so a little cruise gave us time to digest all the suggestions and start planning a route. Plus it means a club cabin, on the cheap, with swmbo on a boat away from home for 2 nights

To honest, pick the wrong one and if all the Booze cruise lot are on there, its worse than being a third class passanger on the Titanic.Plus it means a club cabin, on the cheap, with swmbo on a boat away from home for 2 nights

I'm sure your's will be fine though.
FIPO. Plymouth - Santandar sail on a Sunday, late afternoon, arrive Santandar, Monday lunchtime.
You're doing a mix of the two road trips I've done in my Boxsters.
I'd always promised myself a proper European trip when I bought my first sports car.
Did my first trip (and first time driving abroad) when I was 21 and just a couple of months after buying the car. I too did the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry to try to cut some of the boring autoroute driving out. I then drove across the Pyrenees, had a few days in Perpignan, then drove to Monaco to stay there for the girlfriend's birthday. It was a lot of driving in just over a week, but a great way to get to know the car. It was the only time I owned it that I wished it had air conditioning as it got bloody hot!
Second time around I got the car down to the South of France on the overnight train. It was a bit of a worry getting the car on (and seeing it getting absolutely raced down the station platform by the transport guys!) but very special seeing it being unloaded at the far end. We then drove the south coast, taking in the Millau bridge as a detour(where I got very well acquainted with the French Police...), into Italy (some amazing tunnels) and the Alps, up into Switzerland (very expensive!), and back into France then home on the Calais ferry.
Some amazing memories from both trips. I'm about to sell my current Boxster due to working overseas. While I'm sure I've lost a fortune in depreciation, having done a road trip like this in it somehow makes it easier to stomach. Can't wait for my next trip in whichever sports car I get next!

Love the pictures Olly. Love the Boxster too as well. had a couple myself. Great cars.Video now on-line of Day 3: http://youtu.be/0caHCxOCjb4?hd=1
Very basic, front and rear (outside) cameras. Showing the roads up to and down from Riano. Initial climb was awesome, mostly dry and hardly any traffic. Then a little rain, personal I like driving in rain, especial on a motorcycle but a lot of fun in a car. Just looking for super smooth lines. Then we get to the top and the snow starts coming down pretty heavily. All good fun.

Day 4 Costa Verde
Also changed the mounting points of the video cameras. Front bumper, inside top windscreen and rear right-side. All tested up to 260km without losing one, yet.
Time to soak up the sun along the Coast. Although, not so much sun or sand to be honest. Still plenty of great roads and empty tourist areas.
We took some great footage from the HD cameras so I will edit some together and upload as well.

Great thread
+1Great thread
I myself am planning on doing a euro road trip sometime this summer but have one silly question i hope someone can help with. Why do people use the ferry (i.e. 24hours) instead of the channel tunnel... is there a logical reason that i am missing

I have done the same 3 times now, twice on a motorbike, if your not too time constrained, it is a very relaxing way to start your trip.
The drive to the Chunnel first and then it's a long way down through France to the good roads unless your going into Austria Germany or Holland,
We on the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry (this ferry has been recently replaced by a new ship) its a late afternoon sail, all the next day at sea and then arrival at 8am the next day, fully refreshed and ready to do the first 300-400 miles depending on your route and where your going.
We found it worthwhile, we also covered 3000 miles in 10 days that's with two location having a 2 night stay, the last stint from the Nurburgring to the hook of holland, onto hull and down to Worcestershire was a long day and not the best of the 8 previous days of driving ha ha.
It's entirely personal choice, but a 36hour cruise to start off your driving holiday was to us a good start.
Where you based and when you thinking of going as I would love to do it all of again!
