Just out of interest in my 996 GT3 I was tested at Bedford as a fail at 100db but was allowed as normal GT3s do not trigger the drive-by and I was fine.

Strangely I was tested again at another circuit, same test, same revs and it measured 89db.

The 7.2 RS was 102db at Oulton.

I've been told by a reputed preparer/tuner that exhausts get louder with age. Mine in the 993 RSR failed the noise test twice at Oulton RS Day in March, it had always sailed through before. Richard put it down to a 3 races at the Britcar Porsche Support weekend last October, he said the long periods of full power running at Silverstone would account for the increase in noise.

This only goes to show that noise testing is highly subjective. I realise that drive-by meters may not be under the control of TDOs/circuits, but the hand held meters certainly are and the differences are frequently sufficiently large to make a mockery of the whole process.

Totally subjective and random. Mine was 105 at Oulton and 98 at Spa last weekend, same supposed 50cm at 3/4 max rpm...

Donnington been used as a racetrack since 1931.
Heathrow been used as an airport since 1929 (operating 0600 to 2330, 365 days a year)
A 911 makes around 100db of noise
A 747 around 140db on take-off

Enough said..

I'm assuming that these tests are done with the sport button turned off so as to limit noise?

I was at Donington on this very track day.

I left the 993 at home and went in my Clio 172 track car (for those there it was the silver Phase 1 with black OZ wheels).

The Clio has a full Scorpion system, 4 branch manifold and a stupid 3 or 4" outlet on the back and is frankly horrendously loud. We had our own Db meter with us and it was touching 103Db at 5500rpm when we tested it stationary in the paddock (give or take a couple of Db either way as its not the most expensive meter).

There was something 'funny' going on because we thrashed the 172 all day and had zero problems, whereas I witnessed the Porkers and GTR's with standard pipes getting kicked off left right and centre. By the end of the day loads of standard cars had pipes stuffed with wire wool, mesh and alsorts, it was dreadful.

The GTR was really quiet but it too got shown the door.

By the afternoon loads of people had packed in due to getting flagged for noise.

Really bad if you ask me... If a standard road car cannot pass then what's the point?

I passed a few GT3's in the Clio during the day... Let me guess, your excuses were that you were trying to keep the noise down by not using full throttle?.... winkbiggrin

Had similar probs at Donny at end of Feb. we were warned not to drive CSLs too close together on pit straight due to combined induction noise. There werea few 996 gt3 there who didn't have issue but when I pax with a mate in a Manthey gt3, we got black flagged twice in 5 mins. Even with
mufflers. Bonkers when the planes are flying overhead creating much greater pollution.

Stupid rules...the airport is closer to Castle Donington than the circuit.

Just to add my 2pence worth having been involved in motorsport ( Rallying ) as a driver and owner/builder. Even in the mid 90's noise was starting to become a problem.
Not so much the noise its self but the more a reflexion on the the way society is going.
we struggled to pass noise on a good day but when ALS came on the scene drive by noise became a joke.

So coming from an owner of a 650bhp 911 ( not all that quiet) it still has to be said that Racing circuits are finding it incredibly difficult in this NIMBY country we live in. Motorsport of all disciplines in a risk, it was in the 90's and 2000 and still is. So its a hard pill to swallow considering these tracks were built many many years before any housing scheme were built in the area. If this is what has to be done to keep all forms of Motorsport alive in this country, well it has to be done and actively policed.
On another point ,what we have to remember is that regardless who holds the moral high ground ,peoples lives and living conditions will and must always take precedence over what we do for fun. It hurts me to say all that and I feel a bit peeved, but we have to think about others no matter if they are right or wrong.
Just a wee thought, but eventually, IMHO all forms of motorcar ownership will be seen in the way Smokers are now. Second Class citizens, but hey its a democracy we live in...................isn't it!

Ok ... so why dont the circuits get more aggressive in their defence of their likelihood ?

People living conditions are usually a result of their own choices and I would like to know how many of the moaners and whingers were forced to move into their current house.

Second class citizen for owning a car ???? I doubt it...... the revenue alone is worth squillions they could not do without.

Strange indeed, is the 98db limit regardless of how many cars are causing it at the specific time ? If so than perhaps one overtake at a time would help it, particularly at those critical areas ?

Regarding the residents and their "rights" - I honestly can't imagine it is serious with the nearest houses being a good half a mile away. Unless the fact the you can hear it at all is serious enough... Or perhaps one of the A roads causes more noise in fact...
