Will the 996 GT3 pre-facelift ever be considered "special"?

IMHO the only "special" 996 produced was the GT3 RS . . . . the rest are fugly at best and very odd looking and will be forgotten soon enough!

Which is interesting; as someone who's only Porsches are cups I find the mk1 gt3 more special than the RS from a tech perspective.

Interesting to read the love for Zanzibar, it is indeed a lovely colour.

But the mkI gt3, I just don't know confused I should love it, & it's fantastic to drive but I just can't get away with the looks of the thing.

I much prefer the cleaner lines of the mkI 986 carrera without all the other bits tacked on.

I've seen them in all different colours but I just can't decide if I'll ever like the look of them? I probably will though going by past experience it'll be around about the time that the values go through the roof hehe

No to st on anyone's p&j, as I said they are great to drive but I just don't find them good looking-& that's a big point to me when spending that sort of wedge

I am probably in the minority here but I think the original Harm Lagaay design is far, far superior to the "bodge it and make it more aggressive" look of the mk2. The headlights are one of my favourite things about the original 996 design.

I'll take a guards or zanzibar mk1 clubbie please...

Joel
Whether you are in a minority or not you are 100% correct. A stunningly beautiful car.

I hated the 996 looks when it was realeased and time has done little to change my view. Yes, some angles are OK, like the rear and rear three quarters and the GT3 is the best overall. Of course, looks aside, the GT3 is a mega car and is otherwise right up my street!

But those lights. I try to squint, I try to look past them, but they are still there!!

I know many of you like it and thats perfectly understandable and reasonable. But not me.

Oh, I have my head around THAT engine alright, its one of the greats. I had a ride in serious track dayers Mk2 a couple of weeks ago at Oulton with a rebuilt 390bhp engine.

He could drive too. A bit nice. bow

Yep really. Don't get me wrong they're great cars but I just don't like the aero kit. I can kind of see the aesthetics in the standard 996 (with fried eggs), but the aero kit, even with the gt3 stance just looks a bit meh.

I'll give you that the red looks better than most however thumbup

Still beauty is in the eye & all that-I reserve the right to change my mind smile

I still cannot come to term with all 996 MK1's boxster headlight. So MK2 for me.
