well, yesterday my car went in to OPC Reading for a brake fluid change and I was offered (penciled-in) a new 911 for the whole day. When I got there I was told that the 911 had not yet been brought back (I was early 8am and needed to get away for my day of hooning) so they offered me a Cayman R instead :-)

Black with silver bits, buckets, manual + PSE and thats about it - first impressions . . . its black with silver bits - yuk!

Interior was just bog-standard cayman - same as the Spyder.

Anyway - most important thing - how did it go and handle???

Well overall my impressions are this - its definitely fast and it does handle very well indeed, its very quiet - almost too quiet - surprisingly soft but not wollowly, if you know what I mean - gearbox was good too snickity snick - did it feel much different to Cayman S - NO, did it feel special - NOT REALLY - just fast.

I found it to be very clinical and and bit dull, I also felt that it lacked any character at all, especially when compared to the Spyder which is an epic event wherever you take it - maybe its the looks, maybe its the noise or maybe its just me - but after about 50 miles, I was bored and couldnt wait to get the Spyder back.

Unfortunately I HAD about 280 miles to drive before being reunited with the Spyder frown

Cayman R = very fast but very dull and it looked like a chavs wet-dream, is my overall view - its had the character engineered out of it.

PS - there was a new Boxster S outside the front of the showroom - now that did look nice - the way they have done the back of the roof with much more of a 911 slope is fab! It looks amazing - but still not as good as spdy!!!.

You must be the first to say CR is dull but nice that you like the open top version.

"did it feel much different to Cayman S - NO,"

i found this when i drove one back to back with my gen1 cs(18" wheels standard suspension),agree its a great car and i am a big fan of caymans but it just didnt feel special enough to move out of my cayman s for, hence i went for a spyder instead!
i must admit i was disappointed when the car was launched i was hoping for circa 340hp+

Many people were, but tbh i wonder if the Cayman could cope with much more power? - i mean without having to widen the track, more weight over the rear, much wider rubber etc. It's a light vehicle, like the Spyder is, and in all honesty i think power-weight-performance is just right. Just my 2p.

I blame the Germans although the car museum used to be quite good.

Back to the Cayman R, and I agree with some of Khushy's comments - it's not an event like the Spyder. At the same time that's not such a bad thing on a daily driver in my view - and it is very capable as a car, and very forgiving - more so than a Spyder (from my limited experience of both).

As to looking like a Chav's wet dream - Khushy, isn't your Porsche white with black rims mate? Pot, Kettle etc. Most Porsches end up looking a bit like they're designed for the shell-suit brigade once you apply graphics and body kits IMHO, my own (white) car included.

I love the Cayman R

every change over a S is just better. which makes it a great car.
It drives great, it handles great, it's faster than you think on road, it looks great in white with all the back details.
I could buy a set of extra R spec tyres and wheels and track it.

it's a spyder with a roof and a bit more Bhp whats not to like
my friend had one for 24 hours, we both thought it was a great car to drive hard and use every day.

As for noise, it's louder than a Spyder if both have the PSE !!!

I have driven my Spyder 5 times and yes while I love it and cannot even think of selling it this year, If I had a Cayman R i would at least be using it. Now I have to slum it in a GT3 as a daily :-)
I am very tempted to sell both the GT3 and the Spyder and just have a Cayman R next year, and spend the change on coke and wes.

Poor old Cov, until the Germans got their hands on it, it had the most complete medieval city centre in Europe.

Now all it has is Ikea. .... I didn't even know it had that until the wife dragged me there. weeping

yet another thread from a Boxster Spyder owner justifying his purchase ...

Cayman R is a great little car if you don't want the tent roof of the Spyder.

Have yet to drive a CR, but I have to say - 10 months into Spyder ownership I find myself increasingly frustrated at the noise with the roof on.

I know... it should be down at all times if not raining etc... but it's starting to piss me off now.
We've (as in the wife and I - kids going to Granny's) got a long weekend away to Abersoch (north Wales) in a few weeks and I know for sure she won't want to spend 3 hrs on a motorway under a bloody thin umbrella.

In a CR, no problem.

I need to look into a change, possibly....
