Trying to help a mate choose a 911 and as he lives in North London I suggested Portiacraft.
I couldn't help but notice one of the ad's mentioned 'owned by a local doctor' ... I am sure I have read that on a Portiacraft ad when I was looking at 911's a few years back (I ended up getting one from another specialist).
Hmm....
Is that a big selling point to people?
i.e. this porsche must be great as it was owned by a doctor... I ask as the only doctor I know really does not take care of his car (or his things generally!).

(Both females and not into cars). Some of my friends who are doctors don't seem to treat their cars any differently than any non doctors I know. When I bought my first Boxster, the ad had a similar reference to 'One Doctor Owner'. I think this is just a variant on the 'One lady owner' blurb you used to see a lot in ads.

'I'm a Doctor and I want my sausages'....a barbed line in Fawlty Towers. For some reason, people feel the need to state they are a Doctor, even to the extent of signing in at a hotel 'Dr', or introducing themselves. A Doctor few mates of mine do this, and we rightly rip into them. They cannot help it. Same with the ubiquitous 'bow tie' for the Consultant, or the forum name with 'Doc' prefixed. Why a car owned by a Doctor would be a selling point is a loss on me.

Similarly, how do you know when a pilot walks into the room? Because he tells you.

I have never understood why 'owned by a doctor' is a selling point or a benefit

"Engineer built" is a good one used in kit cars ads. "Oh, engineer built you say?"

I think this is part of a car salesman's patter. My previous 996 was also owned by a Doctor, although I could not actually prove it!
Assuming he was actually a Doctor, I have to say there was no evidence of any delicate surgery and all of the usual bits were worn or rusty just like any other 996 of its age.
So, I don't think that having been owned by a Doctor is any reason to buy a Porsche or any other car!

I remember a pal of mine selling his 996 to a well known dealer in Cheshire and he was in his 40's and on the reg document it had his prefix as Dr (phd) When I saw the car later for sale it was presented as one owner - elderly medical gentleman...how we laughed

SFO said: I have never understood why 'owned by a doctor' is a selling point or a benefit this has been discussed before and it was pointed out that 'owned by a doctor' may actually mean it was ragged from cold and driven like the doc in question stole it .... plus it'll have various wires, holes and bits where the greens, blues, siren , ambulance service radio and the drug safe have been removed ...

Yes, many doctors do drive Porsches, and this is especially true amongst surgeons. However, I cannot fathom how 'owned by a doctor' is 'necessarily' a good selling-point! I am a surgeon and can categorically state that some doctors (e.g. me) spend on their cars as if money were no object, and others (mainly women) just don't care. One thing I have noticed is that most of my close friends (mainly comprised of doctors and bankers) have the same attitude that I have towards looking after any of our possessions, including cars: we take great pride in keeping them in immaculate condition. Last year, when I sold my 5-year-old M3 (with 50k miles), I was told by a used-car-dealer that he was utterly impressed by how new it looked, when he bought it from me. At the same time, a car is there to be used, and I took my previous M3 everywhere, regardless of location, and extracted the performance out of it - safely, of course, as befits an advanced driver In my circles of friends, there is little correlation between getting the performance out of a car, and abusing it. However, I can believe that a correlation exists between maintaining/ managing a car and socio-economic group - although such a relationship has probably more to do with the car's badge, and possibly with the age of the owner.

Carry on working hard and keep patient mortality rates to a minimum, soon you'll be able to afford a new one that doesn't need money spending on it.

I meant with detailing and maintaining them. If you wish to contribute to my fund to buy another new car, then I'll be very happy to accept your donation!

Naff sales patter along the same lines as "One careful lady owner". Any such rubbish in ads just puts me off. I'm bothered about the condition of the car, not the gender or profession of the previous owner.
