I am about to install a becker sat nav unit to my 996 (99 T). Has anyone any suggestions for where to mount the GPS antenna for the best reception? I was thinking of inside on the console under the front windscreen?

This depends on the size of the GPS antenna.

Most these days are the small ones that are flatish and about 1 inch square & a third of an inch thick.

If this is the case, very carefully pop out the piece of plastic that covers your 996 alarm flashing lights in the centre front of the dash very close to the windscreen. (Squeezing from both sides, it should flex some clips and pull up).

Inside here is where Porsche house their GPS antenna for the PCM so is will hide away very well – very OEM

If it is bigger that the one I mention, then I would try it in different surface mount positions, as close to the glass as possible, checking your signal strength (if the sat nav unit allows) to find the best position.

I’ve known quite a few people who have done DIY sat nav installs and have had problems with signal strength because of hiding the antenna to far from the surface or not close enough to the glass.

Good luck.

PS which Becker unit is it? How much & where from?

Thanks for the reply. It is the traffic pro high speed. I got it from ebay - guy in Germany for about £470 including postage etc. Good buy I thought!?

Am also having trouble getting the old crd 22 out with the keys! Is there a knack to doing this?

Ahh yes!
The tabs that the key push on go towards the centre is they are on side on the unit if they are on the bottom they lift up (can't remember which on that model) BUT, a good tip is:

Take of both sides of the centre surround (comprising of left & right switch panels surround) lifting from the bottom of each of the plastic button surrounds and pull towards you, they pop out – can be quite stiff, behind is two Torx 20 screws each side, which if you remove all four, you can the pull the whole unit towards you, at which point the stereo comes free or at least you can get to the inside of the key latches don’t tell anyone! – this may sound a bit complex, but it’s not really.

Good luck!

FYI I have installed a OB2 GPS-based speed camera detector. I installed the receiver next to the alarm light and it gets a strong, uninterrupted signal.
