Gist of conversation was dealer not given any choice.
I'll get more info next time I'm on shift in a couple of weeks.

Out of interest what kind of cost are we talking about for a typical repair of this failure?

The number I gave in the other thread was 18k€ for new Boxster S motor.( equals to a new exhaust system on a Ferrari smile )

I personally still think that DFI engines are a safe bet.

I know this is an old thread but I am not considering a boxster or cayman but the bore score fear has me thinking keep my E46 M3 for the weekends. I have a 996 Turbo as well but we all know there is no issues there.

Are we still with the conclusion they all can score but the 2.7 is less likely. What about GEN 2 models? Are they clear of this virus?

Bore scoring is caused by excessive heat build up in an area of the block due to inadequate water cooling. When you have been on a good blast and stop at say some lights and the already hot engine is idling, the at risk area gets into the danger zone due to the suddnely reduced water flow.

If you now to a full bore start, this is when you are at risk of scoring the bores.

I was speaking with my independent specialist recently and he said the only issue with the 9A1 he's seen, that could be even vaguely classified as a trend failure, was the high pressure fuel pump. Even then I believe a revised pump was fitted as part of a service campaign.

Thanks cmoose - I always refer to the engine as a "more resolved design", mumble something about bearings and stuff, so it's good to know a bit more detail.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread. Now we are four years down the line is anyone able to clarify the failure rate of the 2008MY Cayman/Boxster 3.4 in relation to bore score? Also which one of the two is less likely to suffer from it?

I really want a Gen 1 Boxster S Sports Edition which are all 08 model year.

Thread resurrection!!

I'm looking at a 3.4 Cayman from an indy and speaking to Porsche earlier they said they would do the 111 point inspection before £216, then after 90 days of me owning the car they would have to do another inspection and if that was all clear then £1200 for 2 yrs warranty.

Now without asking them directly, but would that cover me in the event of a bore score implosion event?

Other option is to save up a few quid more and get the 2.9, but it would prob be low spec one etc for my budget.

Im tempted with the car - but wondering how much of a problem the 3.4 is.

Part of me thinks if it was this much of a problem, there wouldnt be any for sale as they would have all blown up!
