If(If) I was you hurry up as delivery times are now August 05 or if your not in a rush a few used on the market....etc

I'd say "forget the milage" if you're in the Cayenne S market, it's kind of like buying a yacht, if you can afford one the gas is going to be incidental.

However, you might be interested in the fact that the Cayenne is responsible for putting Porsche at the bottom, well third from the bottom, of the 2004 JD Power Initial Quality Survey, when Porsche normally enjoys a much superb standing.

Visit the Cayenne forums out there and all you hear is a long string of whining, crying, and complaining. Yes, it's a fun car to drive.

With all the ticky tacky styling ques inside, such as the bright metal triangles on the steering wheel, I've never seen a Porsche that wanted to be a Lexus so bad. It's an embarassment to Porsche, building a 5300-pound pig, albeit with a big motor able to scrub rubber off tires quickly, when Porsche's reputation was formerly one of "the giant killer" being able to win races with smaller displacement, lighter weight, superb handling, and durability. What ever happened to "forget the unnecessary"????????

Interesting...

If you read some of the independent press, it gives the impression that the the car was selling like hot cakes (the best selling Porsche in the US?)

I wasn't aware that there were any major build quality problems. My year old 996 has spent more time in the garage than it should have done with stupid problems. does that mean that Porsche have a problem all round?, and according to the press today German cars all round got a right hammering which is unusual.

If you read any 996 thread, build engine and other problems are really causing a problem and when you spend that sort of money should that be the case?

The MPG is more of interest than a deciding factor. The 996 does 22 - 24mpg which is pretty good, but it would be interesting to know what the Cayenne does in real life, not just according to the book.

Still think the demo one looks good sitting in the drive though!

as mentioned on a previous post, i borrowed a cayenne s for 2 days whilst my car was in for a service. the combined mpg for the two days was around 14 mpg. lovely drive though. if you're thinking of a 4x4 why don't you get a range rover vogue?

If you want a 4x4 to do the odd bit of towing but the rest of the time it's a 'car' then the Cayenne makes far more sense than a Range Rover. It handles superbly - if you can get past the styling - it is a superb motor. Only had one or two electrical gremlins on my father's and the tyres wore out fairly quickly - Porsche paid half the cost of new tyres! No complaints.

Just fancied another Porsche.

The re-sale value of the Range Rover is pretty crap isn't it?

The Cayannes seem to be shedding money rapidly too. There is a great spec S on Ebay for £38k and Portiacraft have sold one for £42k. Thats £10k in 12 months!

I would take a Rangie anyday. S class comfort, majestic and what an interior.

I've always loved the RR, thought it may may good alternative to the Bentley.

Arrange to have a "vogue" for the weekend - returned it early! Amazing interior, loved the design but the handling & the engine noise (so obtrusive) under load just made it impossible! (IMO).

Most fun with the new RR was a "off road" morning at Millbrook!

Not had chance to drive Cayanne yet....

Was it a diesel or petrol? I had a previous generation 2.5 DHSE for work, it was noisy and slow, though looked great and was comfortable.

I had an S for a week from AFN reading it was fantastic in all respects apart from not being as fast as the turbo which is a quick car by anyone defination( i have only had a day in one of these)it does not handle as well the turbo which has the super air suspention gizmo that realy works.
To answer the original question I got 8mpg from the S during spirited driving that was 3 tanks ouch , But as dogsharks says if you can afford the beast you can feed it.
word on the street is it will have a facelift after the 997 is in full production so early ones may become better value as certain people are obsesed by having the lateist model.
If I had kids or a dog I would have one or maby not maby the turbo would be to tempting.
